PSU doesn't have 8 pin for mobo, what do I need?

Thread Starter
I have an EVGA 780i SLI 775 motherboard and I am using a back up PSU and I just found it doesn't have the 8 pin connector for my motherboard. Are there any adapters for it? Where would I get one? Thanks.

Yeah, as long as you aren't overclocking like crazy, you don't need to use a 8 pin, just plug in the 4 pin.

This is the power supply: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817709014

This is the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813188024

The CPU is the Intel Q9550, overclocked to 3.4Ghz.

The PSU has a single 6 pin PCI-E and an unmarked 4 pin, which I assume is for the motherboard.

Which one do i need? They both look correct to me, anyone else know?

8 pin is not required, and adapters don't do anything beneficial.

It just helps stabilize overclocks. The adapters just take the load from the 4 wires and spread it over 8, which can actually cause issues.

Okay, but do the adapters help with the 8 pin? I want to have my Q9550 overclocked to 3.4Ghz. Will the 4 pin allow this and/or will the 8 pin adapter?
I ran my EVGA FTW3 w/ i7 950 at 3.4 GHz no problem on a 4 pin connector, just try it out, in the worst case, your system will have unstable voltages and give you a BSOD to let you know. Basically pick if you want to use the top four pins or the bottom four and go for it...that's what EVGA told me when I contacted their customer support!

Good Luck and don't worry!

Thanks guys. I had to make a new account, because all my passwords and stuff are kept in n password program, so idk any of my passwords, lol.

So far so good, except my CPU heatsink fan turns on, then turns off. Not sure why, but temps are the same. Probably due to my cases two fans right on top of the heatsink.
