He dismissed those who criticize the sound quality of Beats. Competitors use fancy equipment to determine how headphones should sound, he said, whereas he and Mr. Young simply know how they should sound.

“The way we hear music is almost the opposite of the way these sound companies hear music,” he said.

Kudos for him seeing a target audience and capitalizing off of it. If you realize how much money is spent on car audio (and realizing that most of those systems sound awful), you can see how a headphone could be designed to cater to those that think the more the bass, the better the sound. I'd never own these, but I'm jealous that he's getting rich off of these clowns.

Yes, they hear music with the sound of high profits per unit sold. Costs less to market than to actually put "fancy" technology to use.

I second this.
Aside from the poor audio quality, they also suffered from reliability issues.
My old roommate returned 3 pairs of Beats in less than a month, despite them sitting in the case 80% of the time and they were worn in the house only.

More bass =/= better

Gees, talk about a marketing statement masquerading as an article. I thought the NYT were better than this.

To each his own. Although the way we hear music is subjective, at least "real" audio companies are still selling better quality headphones for much less dough.

I just feel sorry for the suckers who bought Beats because it's an accepted social fashion accessory. They are missing out on why they were made in the first place.

I couldn't agree more.

Awesome plug for Beats quite frankly.

in my mind, beats have a certain value to society see here:

He continued: “You wouldn’t watch ‘Avatar’ on a small screen with a blurry picture, and yet people were consuming music like that. So we said: ‘You know, everything else out there looks like medical equipment right now. Let’s make it look cool and have a good vibe about it. But yet make it powerful.’ ”

point is, they may be ridiculously priced, but they have increased the overall appreciation for sound quality.

Not like i would ever buy them, but if you try to convince your average teenager to buy 555's or whatever you audio people recommend now a days, you would probably get laughed at.

All in who you know. Network, network, network. It just goes to show you, the right person could sell a frostbitten Eskimo in a blizzard, a bucket of ice with the right packaging and marketing.

If you want a top quality headset with ALLOT OF BASS, then the Sony MDR-XB500 are perfect. They sound mint but are also built very well.
