Mother needs a laptop...pls help advise on which one

Ok so my mother is ditching her desktop(Dell Q6600 G0) and has requested a laptop for Xmas...so my father came to me and told me to find her one...but to be honest...the sea of laptops has me completely lost....if i was building a desktop i would be fine...but researching laptops has my head spinning

so ill give ya a list of what i feel should be considered when looking...this laptop will only be used for facebook game, surfin the net and just basic computing things that normal older people do biggrin.gif

Price- between 1-650$...can be ordered from anywhere in the US or bought in a B&M store like best buy

CPU- i honestly dont care...be it sandy bridge or llano....i want the best bang for the buck
GPU- again it will most likely be integrated...but it does need the option to scale to at least the stand res of a 55" tv which i believe is the standard 1920x1080 but cant confirm that
RAM- obviously the more the merrier but a minimum of 4gb
Screen- um...minimum of 15.6 with bigger being better obviously (she needs better glasses lol)...glossy is ok as long as it doesnt look like a frickin mirror
Battery- again longer the better but the computer will mostly be in the house or on short outings so i would say 3-4 hours minimum
Weight-Lighter the better...she will be using it sitting on the couch and in bed
Color- nothing outrageous...no crap browns or lambo yellow and no white

now ive looked at a ton of them already...seems the dv6's from HP are good...as i hear the dell 15R is decent as well...but other than that...no idea....so please give me some links or some models to look into and +rep for anyone that gives some good things to consider...thanks

I highly recommend that you check out websites like slickdeals.net, especially as we get closer to Black Friday/Cyber Monday.
You should also sign up for Newegg's email newsletters so you can get a preview of all the deals before the day of the sales.

Does your mom have any preference for screen size and weight? That was the first thing my mom wanted to consider before anything else.

That said, here's what you should look for:
- Ideally an i3 or i5 processor
- Preferably a dedicated graphics chip of sorts (when comparing laptops, use http://www.notebookcheck.net to compare GPUs)
- A screen resolution higher than 1366x768 if you plan on hooking it up to your TV

To give you an idea of what $650 gets you, here's the laptop (15" HP DV6T select edition) I got my brother this past August:
i5-2410M processor, AMD/ATI HD 6770M, 6 GB RAM, BD-ROM Drive, LED-backlit LCD, plus a free Xbox 360 for $798. After selling the 360, the total price spent was ~$650.

The HP dv6t select edition is a really nice laptop, doesn't feel as cheap or plastic-y as the old HP Pavilion dv6000/9000 etc series. With the HD 6770M, my brother is able to play BF3 on all medium settings (AA and all the other nice things off, of course) at a very playable framerate (~50 FPS). I doubt your mom will be wanting to play BF3, so any card below that should do the trick. Note that with a more powerful graphics card, you're going to get a larger more powerful power brick to deliver the necessary wattage, so that might be something to consider as well when making your purchase.

yeah i put a list in my OP with weight and screen size...but weight isnt a big issue and screen size bigger than 15.6

so where did you pick up that dv6t at? i wouldnt mind that deal at all

yeah she wont be gaming at all other than FB games....thats why my father doesnt want to spend more than 650 maybe 700 at the most

I purchased the laptop from HP directly, through a deal advertised on slickdeals.net (used three coupons on HP's website to cut the price down)

I wouldn't recommend the dv6t se for your mom, solely because of the weight factor. It is quite heavy, even after I replaced the hard drive with a solid state drive.

If you're lucky, laptops like the Toshiba Portege, Acer Ultrabook, and Asus Zenbook may go on sale and reach the $700 range, Just keep posted with various e-retailers, and once you see a good deal read as many reviews as you can find about it.
