A reasonable capacity HDD should be many times faster than flash for sequential access, and I suspect that's how it would be used - just as user storage.

But flash memory is already fast enough for typical tablet tasks like watching a 720p movie.

The only reason for a hdd in a tablet would be for the additional storage, but imo it isn't necessary.

The only flash device I use is a phone, and it seems painfully slow transferring even small files to/from it. How long to get a whole movie or two onto a tablet? If it could be faster I'd want it to be.

I can transfer a 1.14gb movie to my ipad in about 5-10 minutes over wifi... I don't know what you mean by slow.

The way my brother treats his iPad an HDD wouldn't survive a day in it.

I have a Hard-Drive Walkman that's been truly battered over the years and still works fine.

So does that mean that all mechanical harddrivers share the same fate? Nope.avi.

Yeah I just went and grabbed my phone, plugged it in via usb and put a 2gb movie on it - Took just under 7 minutes. Transfer rate was 5MB/s

That seems basically fine?

No....HDD is ancient technology. It is the slowest component of a modern day computer. Everything else has pretty much exploded but we still only have HDD as a viable large storage solution. I don't count SSD due to a few things. It's simply not as easy to use as a HDD, what I mean is plug it in and forget about it. Nothing really needs to be done at all(HDD)...maybe a defrag 2-3 years down the line but for most people that's not even needed. Price is also a big concern too, for the price of a 120gb SSD I can get a few tb of HDD storage.

I agree with them.

They want a 5mm 2.5" hybrid HDD. In a few years, this would be a 1TB HDD with something like 16-32GB NAND. This would be an ideal product to ultramobile PCs and tables. The NAND would cache the OS/primary applications while the 1TB would be great for bulk media.
Once again...

Hmmmm, Yea.. I can see this being used if given the time to be smaller and more efficient, with just around 512mb to 8gb of NAND memory for the OS and system stuff.
