I have been The Elder Scrolls since Morrowind. This is not me ripping on the new Elder Scrolls, but more of a critical examination. I am a fan of all of them and am currently playing Skyrim myself and enjoying the heck out of it. But anyway am I the only one who thinks Bethesda is going to ruin their series for their true fans? There is a certain shine in the series that hasn't been seen since Morrowind.

Morrowind's experience was much more immersive. You got into the game, Immigrated to the island, got your quest and that was it. You didn't have a detailed map of the world. That was for you to find. And it never told you "There's a dungeon right that way!" and there were never way points. If you had to find a specific dungeon you better listen well or be prepared to look through your journal because no magical force is going to show you the way. But that was awesome! It gave Morrowind a much better feel and it was more satisfying when you found the dungeon and exited heroically with the loot and a new tale. Or fast travel? I know you don't need to use it and I don't, but I feel with the addition of needless features like fast travel, and way points it really takes away from the game. Especially for the hardcore Elder Scrolls fans.

And than Oblivion came and that was when it started to go degrade. I don't mind a lot of the addition features but the ones they get rid of were crucial to the series I think. And with Skyrim what now? As far as I can tell there is no spell crafting, Enchanted seems dumbed down, and really it seems magic in general just isn't as cool. The interface is worse than oblivion and barely has mouse support. There are no attributes. I do not like the new leveling. Perks are an awesome addition, but no Strength Agility or anything? For those unaware of the old leveling system it is this.

Create you character. Choose you race and choose a class (or custom class) with 5 major skills and a selection of minor skills. To level up you needed to raise 10 levels distributed between your major skills. During the level you can choose to raise three different attributes which increase according to how many levels were raised of skills that fall under the specific attribute. But now leveling and character development is simple aside of the new park system. The new leveling isn't any cooler IMO. They took away something just as cool.

What does everyone else think about this? As I have said I love TES games. I will most likely continue to play them. They are still amazing games they are just not to the same quality as they used to be. I think one of the problems is the need to satisfy the console industry. It explains the poor magic and even worse interface.

I love Skyrim and it has potential to bump my love for Morrowind to 2nd. Morrowind world was so unique and played a part in my early video game days lol so its biased. I like what Bethseda has done with the menus. They could use an improvement but overall Im enjoying it

I agree mostly. I loved Morrowind, still my fave TES game. Oblivion was good, but it felt too dumbed down from what Morrowind had, especially in the way of skills and abilities. I mean you had Light Armor, Medium Armor, Heavy Armor, Axe, Blunt Weapon, Long Blade, SHort Blade, Hand-to-Hand, Unarmored, Mercantile, Spear Weapons. Then in Oblivion that shrank... And now again in Skyrim.

I'm actually glad they got rid of classes all together, I always made a custom class and chose the skills I wanted to use, not some predefined, so they at least got that right. But the physical skills list has gone to hell. We're down to just 3 weapon skills, One-handed, Two-handed, and Archery... come on now, wheres the versatility?

I think it has a lot to do with the "perk" system. It's a cool idea in theory, but what some people might not realize... all those 'perks' you have to choose now... Those were GIVEN to you for skilling up. If you spent the time to level your Archery skill to 100 in Morrowind, it GAVE you the chance to paralyze targets, you weren't limited by choices. If you worked for it, you were rewarded. This 'perk' system takes away that reward. Well maybe not takes away, but it limits you.

As for the map and fast travelling... I whole-heartedly agree. I miss the days of wandering Vvardefnfell looking for a cave, or having to *gasp* read my journal to figure out where I was supposed to go. And the only 'fast' travel they had was the silt striders that went to certain cities, and the boats around Vivec.

You know what else I miss, that's been gone since Morrowind... freaking LEVITATE!! What the hell happened to that? I loved skilling up my Alteration and making a super powerful spell I could cast and levitate for like 5 minutes straight.

Come to think of it... what the hell happened to Athletics and Acrobatics? Why'd they ditch those?

Don't get me wrong, I'm loving Skyrim (73 hours and counting), and it feels more like Morrowind than Oblivion did, to me at least, but there's still so much missing from it.

I really wish the Tamriel Rebuilt project would get finished. Been following that for like 8 years now.

Elder Scrolls series is now more of an action game than an RPG. It used to be an RPG with action elements. Now it is a action game with some stats.

They basically changed the game style. It is not necessarily bad, but it is a different game.

Pre-Oblivion = RPG

Post-Oblivion = Action game

I disagree, still get the same feeling of ES in all 3. The combat has greatly improved but not close to consider it more of action game with some rpg. The only things they really changed from oblivion were the animations and speed, and ofcourse finishers. Still feels the same just better less clunky

I never played Morrowind, but my friend played it and told me about it in JR high (i am now graduated in college). Because of him I bought oblivion with my first 360 and i played the crap out of the game. I loved it. A lot. I like the idea of fast traveling and what not... you don't have to fast travel if you dont want to... and as for the compass thing; that can be turned off via .INI file if you're playing PC (not sure about console). And I always thought of acrobatics skill to be sorta dumb. it's like being a hero that enjoys jumping and skipping around joyfully and picking up flowers for alchemy... but of course TES is the only game that can really make a bada$$ hero do that kind of stuff... in any other game it would be shunned.

Lockpicking is different.

Morrowind = stat based
Oblivion = partially stat based, action based
Skyrim = virtually all action based

While I agree with some of the things said here, I do have to say a few things to the defense of both Skyrim and the direction TES is going.

  1. If you don't like Fast Travel, you don't have to use it.
  2. While there is a kind of immersion found in having to find things via conversations and journal entries personally I didn't like it that much. I think maybe it is that now, unlike is Middle School when I got Morrowind, I don't have hours and hours to just wander around. While that wandering is fun when I sit down for an hour to game I want to actually accomplish something not just see some more trees and misinterpret what that one guy in that one inn said.

The Athletics and Acrobatics skills were kind of ridiculous, everybody max leveled them by walking into a wall overnight or jumping everywhere. However that hasn't completely gone away, I think it is the Speech skill in Skyrim that you level up by selling stuff...yeah that is kind of the same thing.

I like the leveling system, if only because it is different than any other RPG I have ever played. Personally after 21 years of upping the numbers on Strength and Endurance in every game under the sun it got a bit boring. I also definitely think it makes the game more accessible, which in my opinion is a good thing. Now instead of just throwing numbers into something you get a description of what something actually does. I also really like the "use this and you get better at it" aspect of the leveling system.

And I agree with Marafice Eye, Skyrim is definitely different than Morrowind, but it is DEFINITELY going in the right direction compared to Obilivion.
