Dead GPU?

Hi,

So there I was, happy as can be, my first time playing Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. I press the "m" key to open the map. Within seconds, my screen goes black, fans hit 100%, and the sound distorts. I press the reset switch on the computer, it turns back on. The problem is that my monitor goes into sleep mode as if no GPU was detected. I let it run a while and I hear the Windows chime as if windows loaded normally. I shut it down by holding the power button and try again and nothing. mad.gif I swapped the 6 pins on the card, no dice, cleared CMOS, nothing. I took it out and put in a back up 4670 as turned my computer on. Monitor receives signal and everything is normal. Any ideas on what's going on with my card? If it really is dead, who do I contact about an RMA? I bought it from Newegg about a year and a half ago.

Thanks in advance.

Hop over to Sapphires site and they should have Support and RMA stuff somewhere, Newegg only handles like a month or two from shipping mostly in the case of sending out defective hardware. Not too sure how Sapphire handles stuff and although it sounds like a GPU problem, and troubleshooting shows it is.... Sound distortion o.o I'm not one to say but that doesn't sound like a GPU could cause that?

Yeah that definitely sounds like a dead GPU.

It looks like you need to talk to Newegg about RMA, Sapphire must not have any offices in the US.

Alright, I did just that. I submitted a support ticket, never had any experience with RMA's. Hopefully all goes well and I get a replacement. But something tells me they won't send my orignal card back since they are not made anymore I think. Anyone know what I will get back?

If they dont make your card any more they will send you one of same cost you paid in the first place, I had a XFX 5770 XXX that I had to RMA and in return I got a Sapphire 5850 Xtreme so I was happy biggrin.gif but I was also offered some Nvidia 460 but I have had a lot of Sapphire cards in the past and not one of them had ever died.

Ok....I was feeling desperate and put the card back in and see if it would boot and it DID!!! wheee.gif Only problem is now Windows reports that the card is running in a 4x slot! That's impossible since I only have one x16 lane on this mATX board! Anyone have an idea what's going on?!

Check the power connection from PSU to the card (not related to PCIe lane).

Restore to Factory Defaults in CCC upper right corner roll out menu then uninstall Catalyst.

Restart PC and install latest WHQL Catalyst 11.11 http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx

I took the card out and tried plugging different 6 pin power adapters and now Windows reports that the card is in a x16. Thanks everyone! Rep!
