Stick with GTX 460 SLI or return one 460 and get a 580 lighting??

Ok so this is my problem. I bought my brother two gtx460 which have no problem running BF3 on high settings at 1080p. However do you think it would be worth it to sell one of the 460 for 150 bucks and use that money towards a msi 580 lighting and designated the other 460 to physics. Or keep the 460's in SLI, Which would yield better performance for him? Thanks guys!

Having 460s in SLI is comparable to a stock 580: http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2118943

It would be a waste of money to sell one 460, buy a 580, and have the other 460 deal with physics. The Fermi series of cards are designed to handle physics very well.. the SLI 460s probably aren't even reaching 100% GPU usage, so he should definitely stick with what he has so far.

yeah this right here, but if your feeling you want an upgrade do it, I bought a second 560ti to sli and ran very good on bf3 but the fact that it didnt do crysis 2 (dont think its sli optimized or something) without flickering windows I returned one card and sold the other and got a gtx570, sure its "less" performance but i have one card so no sli issues and it does bf3 ultra with msaa off with 1080 like the 560ti sli did, sure min fps is lower but still in the 40fps range for minimum. And I have a single card that does crysis 2 better, the 560ti would hit min of 26-28fps on crysis 2.

edit: the moral is do what you feel you want biggrin.gif lol

OK then would it be better to just sell the one 460 and then buy two Toxic 6950's that can unlock to 6970's and run them in CF, for a total of 4gb of ram, that would completely destroy a sing 580 right??

I want my bro to be able to play BF3 with the texture turned from medium to high and possibly ultra in a few spots. while sustaining above 40 fps

I don't see why he can't run textures in ultra.. my single 560ti handles ultra textures just fine (1080p, ultra textures, high everything else, 2x MSAA, AO off, 16x AF) with frames that average around 50 FPS.

By the way, CF/SLI setups do NOT add VRAM. The cards are a mirror of each other, meaning that the VRAM of one card is still the total VRAM available for use.

Keep the 460's, I'm waiting for keplar myself smile.gif

I play bf3 on ultra and it's basically 60 fps at all times. So 6950 cf is a good setup for that game.
