6970 vs Gtx 570/580 - Page 5

Keep the 6970...

A 580 will be fractionally quicker in some titles but the 6970 will outperform the 570 in most.

Its not worth the money going from a 6970 to a 580.

I say that as I have owned both.

I love my GTX 580; it was a quality upgrade from my 8800 GTX.

(Could they get any more confusing with naming conventions, by the way? GTX 580 > 8800 GTX but if you were unfamiliar with the progression you'd assume the opposite.)

If you like silence when you game etc and want power then you can't go past the Nvidia GTX 570. I have 2 in my rig in SLI and I hardly hear them (my case fans make more noise). The AMD range is about where the Nvidia GTX 480 was and when they get hot they sound like leaf blowers. Go green with envy mate.

I am by no means a fanboy but imho nVidia cards always felt more powerful. I don't know but when I use an nVidia card it's like it does it job plowing through frames like an unstoppable juggernaut. I never got that feeling with an AMD card (and neither have you seeing you experienced FPS drops, stutter. Not saying you won't have it with nVidia but I don't really notice it if it's there).

Of course, that's completely irrelevant to actual benchmarks tongue.gif
And I don't know but I thought a 570 was a tad bit faster than a 6970 (generally, there are games where the 6970 beats it). And IIRC nVidia's handle tesselation better.
I don't think you'll notice a lot of difference but being unhappy about your rig is no good at all and gets worse over time.

Now, a 580 is a lot more expensive but you do get that warm fuzzy feeling knowing you have the best single-gpu card on the market (at a price, but it's such a good feeling biggrin.gif ).

I really don't care what brand is in my rig, I just want to feel good about it. (Can't say that about my CPU atm frown.gif )

Now about scaling in CFX and being comparable to nVidia: Numbers aren't everything so I'd suggest you read this

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2011/11/22/battlefield_3_multiplayer_performance_iq_review/4

and if you have some extra time: saw this link in a forum member's sig someday and read it. Pretty interesting:

Here:

560Ti (third fastest nvidia single gpu) vs 6950 (second fastest amd single gpu)

570 (second fastest nvidia single gpu) vs 6970 (top of line amd single gpu) only just though.

580 beats all single gpu cards out.

So in bf3 for example without AA the AMD 6970 will beat a 570 but with AA on (you will probably want it on for a $300+ GPU) the 570 beast the 6970. For some reasons still the amd side are having trouble with drivers and tweaking things to make the AA give the gpu a less of a hit.

If you want to play bf3 @ 1080p @ 60 FPS on ultra with AA, go for the GTX 580 then sli next year when prices drop.

If you wan to play bf3 @ 1080p 60 FPS on ultra without AA, go for the 6970 then crossfire laster on.

cheapest route is AMD but best performance for you will be nvidia.

So TL;DR? GTX 580 will be the best option for you.

Let me just say I am VERY, VERY disappointed with my GPUs. Even running with Crossfire disabled, and leaving the fan on auto 60% I frequently hit 85-88C with just the bottom card running!!! If I run 2 I basically have to have the fans running perma 100% on both, and even then they still get nearly in the 90C range, unacceptable. And there isn't a damn thing I can do about it that won't cost me BIG $$$. So I'm basically screwed with what I got. These cards run way too hot, the fans are really noisy past 60%, they sound like a Ford Powerstroke diesel revving up at 100% fan speed. Bought 2 extra case fans, re-applied thermal compound on both GPUs, did very little. They run too damn HOT. 85C+ is unacceptable.

Not to mention, I have had a ton of driver issues with ATI. I used to go with Nvidia, but gave ATI a shot with some 6970s, and I am VERY disappointed.

This is coming from personal experience with the product, and for the money I spent, I demand full FPS, highest settings and stable temps. Would anyone expect less with crossfire 6970s?

I would trade these 2 cards for 2 570s in a heart beat. Technically nothing wrong, they just run too hot. Ice Q cooling doesn't live up to its name either, they run 1-2C cooler over reference, fans are just as loud.

You know, this was my exact experience with reference 6970's. I think its a card you need to get with aftermarket cooler if you're going to run crossfire. I had at the time BOTH 570 SLI and 6970 CF and I chose to keep the 570's for this reason even though the 6970's were a bit faster.

Thanks Scorpion49 and chaosblade02 for the information about the AMD based GPUs and especially how they perform in Crossfire mode both thermally and with drivers. These are the type of comparisons that I find most relevant. People can post Tom's Hardware benchmark comparisons all day long but the inconvenience of two blow-dryers deafening me 24/7 or the idea of terrible Crossfire drivers for games other than fully optimized ones are important considerations people should know about.

(Note that NVIDIA cards can have the exact same problems and SLI support has its own issues as well, so I'm not bashing on AMD components as the only ones "at fault" for this.) Thanks again for the information.

I have a 6950 and a GTX580 and they're both so close in performance in the games we play that I honestly can't tell the difference without some sort of benchmark. Also, I use Antec P180 cases, so I can't hear any of my cards. As far as driver problems, I've never run across any with either company. I've had great results with cards from both camps over the years, so I'll continue to buy the best bang for the buck.
