That's incorrect... Not all optical out devices send 5.1 or 7.1... most just do 2 channel optical out.... Check your motherboard book before doing that...

I spent:

- $20 on an Asus Xonar DG
- $250 older 5.1 Denon AVR
- $200 on 4 match speakers + a center
- $80 on a second hand sub

I will never go back to "PC" self-powered speakers, the sound quality you get is ridiculous in comparison, don't actually take up too much space, and will last a lot longer too. You can easily get 10 years out of a decent sound setup.

So I think I've decided on getting a pair of Polk RTi4's http://www.crutchfield.com/p_107RTI4B/Polk-Audio-RTi4-Black-oak-finish.html?tp=186&avf=N&nvpair=FFBrand%7cPolk+Audio.
Still thinking if i should pick up a sub, but i'll see once i get these in.
