I see people selling sata cables labelled as "Sata III". Is there any difference between Sata 2 and 3 cables or is it just marketing crap?

This

In short, the answer is no. Not really. SATA III was specifically designed to be backwards compabible with the cabling for SATA II to minimize cost to the consumer/industry.
