Skyrim INI Tweak for amazing looking shadows

post #1 of 13
Thread Starter
So I've been tweaking around the INI tweaks for a while. Haven't done any FXAA mod for now. I found this shadow tweak here.

Add or change the following in your SkyrimPrefs.ini file:
Code:
fShadowBiasScale=0.1500
fInteriorShadowDistance=2500.0000
fShadowDistance=2500.0000
iBlurDeferredShadowMask=3
iShadowMaskQuarter=4
iShadowMapResolution=4096
iShadowFilter=4
fShadowLODStartFade=500.0000
iShadowMode=4
bTreesReceiveShadows=1
bDrawLandShadows=1
bDrawShadows=1
bShadowMaskZPrepass=0
iShadowMapResolutionSecondary=4096
iShadowMapResolutionPrimary=4096
iShadowMapResolution=4096

Here are the results:

Default Ultra Shadows
338

Tweaked Shadows
338

Enjoy!

Great mod, been reading up on this and it appears the issue is that Skyrim's shadows are not dynamic and real time, and only change every 7 seconds or so, causing the flicker, this mostly eliminates that by giving a larger and sharper resolution to the shadows smile.gif

The only reason the shadows got better is because you decreased fshadowdistance from 8000 to 2500. This makes shadows look better, but also reduces their rendering range. Take some before and after pictures of a landscape and you will see the difference.

That's correct. Personally, I tend to explore dungeons and caves more often. In that case sharper shadows works better. Guess we just have to wait for hard-modded shadows to arrive.

Yeah, but shadows for dungeons, caves, and other interiors spaces are already good since they are affected by fInteriorShadowDistance, which is already 2500 by default. The only thing you did by decreasing fshadowdistance was lower the range to where only shadows withing a short range of you look good. That tends to look weird when exploring a large open world. I have mine set to 6000 and feel its a good balance when combined with the LOD tree shadows mod. Shadows look better than default, but still render pretty far out. I never stay still and examine shadows long enough for this to be an issue.

This is correct - it's essentially stretching the shadow map when you have a big shadow draw distance. But running with a low draw distance makes the game look way worse.

iShadowMapResolution can be run way higher than 4096 ...I run mine at 16368, fShadowDistance I leave at 6000 (I think default for ultra is 8000).

My 2gb of vram copes with this fine, and I notice NO fps loss, but I don't know how it would run on cards with lower amounts.

I've posted this 3 times now, but here is the difference:

Map Resolution: 4096, draw distance 6000:
338

Map Resolution: 16368, draw distance 6000:
338
