smile.gif unlocked 4th core, didn't realize it was as easy as pressing "4" while booting!!

never OC'd before, but from my initial 24hrs of playing around, this so far seems stable: 3375 GHz ~= 10% over stock + 1 free core! Yay!

temps seem ok when doing normal stuff, will leave some prime95 burning overnight to see if it survives!

Haha, well, it survives, it got build in protections so it is no "problem" to leave it over night unless it burns straight away. Are you using stock cooler?
well, didn't quite seem stable like that... i have it set as follows... "CPU temp" up to 63C after about 5 mins of prime95

using Asus TurboV: CPU Freq: 221Mhz (up from 200), CPUV 1.46V, NBV 1.225V

244

i'm using a CoolerMaster V8: http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/cm_v8/ with an Asus M4a785td-v evo board... i believe it's a pretty decent setup for OC'ing, but still very new to the whole thing. temp up to 64C under load, as i'm typing this!

Your chip unlocked without the L3 cache, means that it's actually a native Propus and not Deneb. Propus chips usually require a higher voltage to stay stable. However, for the frequency you're running at, that much vcore should be more than enough. Remember cores are locked for a reason and there's the possibility that the core you unlocked is defective in a way and needs more vcore to stay stable. Bugger up is after unlocking cores, one loses the ability to monitor core temps. Don't go by CPU temps all that much since its usually more than what you're actually running at. You're cores should be anywhere between 2-8c lower. But for a V8, those temps are unusually high for the frequency and voltage. What are your room temps?

And welcome to the club thumb.gif

Thanks PunkX! Really appreciate the input.

Room temps are high, that's for sure -- i'm in Singapore and the room itself is like a greenhouse, capturing sunlight through the day and really heating up the whole room.

What CPU temp as reported by this Asus utility do you think should be the absolute max. that I should tolerate under prime95 load?? I left it running today with the volts and frequencies below when I went to work, I just hope that I don't come back to a molten pile of silicon! Good to know that he core temps will probably be lower than the CPU temp -- I guess worst case if the cores overheat they have some kind of protection. Also, idling temps (which it will be at most of the time, i only really use for surfing) are way lower. I'd just like to have something that's as fast as possible but also rock solid even under constant load.

Given this chip (Propus II 440, C2) and mobo, any advice also what kind of theoretical max's I should be looking to set for the CPU frequencies and CPU/NB V?

This should help with regard to core temps and CPU temps:

Here's a list of AMD's max temp ratings for different chips:

latest test is now 226Mhz to yield 3.4Ghz w/ CPUV at 1.5V and NBV at 1.25V (wasn't stable at this frequency with lower volts)
stable so far for a couple of hours in prime

but CPU temp showing 72C! if cores are ~8C lower than i guess they're close to or at their max. sensible usage rating ~ 64C... ???
