I've been hesitating in buying some of the more expensive components on my build, as I wont be starting it until late december and it will take me some time. This is my first build in quite some time and my first WC. It seems every vendor has a decent DOA and general return policy within 30 days, but outside of that, the buyer is on their own with the manufacturer warranty process. I missed my chance on a great price for the ASRock X79 Extreme9 due to my reluctance to purchase anything other than my psu, pump, and ram (all huge dales) ahead of time.

What is your opinion on purchasing components ahead of time? Is it a bad idea to risk falling outside of that 30 day window giving up the ability to RMA, or is it so rare an occurrence that it is not a concern??

Thanks for your input!

I like to buy my items all at once.

1- I know the purchase and arrival date of each item much easier that way.
2- It is much more exciting to receive it all together biggrin.gif
3- Can return items right away if need be.
4- Can build the computer quickly (I am not very patient when it comes to computer components. If I get something, I want to use it right away!)

I would only purchase 1 or 2 components ahead of time as long as I knew I would be purchasing the rest very shortly, and it was a killer deal.

Just my opinion! smile.gif

If I were you I would wait. Not because of the Warranty but for better prices as holidays approach. I have bought my pump res and fans waiting on the rest but there is a PPC deal that I plan on taking advantage. The problem is I wasn't expecting to go so high but I want some particular items.rolleyes.gif

I say, Get the stuff you can get now....
But you can go the other way, but you won't be able to really test components cause something might be missing e.g motherboard but no cpu... or vice versa.

However, it's always best to try and get the main/major parts all at once, the ones I said above.. You'll need those essential parts to even make things work. If you can and opted to get parts now get the main/major parts or get the parts that you can test from the get go, again if you can test them. Parts like psu's or RAM or a GPU can be bought later IF you have conjoining parts to test them out with.

If anything this is what I would do right now with the rig I have.. I would get cpu and motherboard first as I have some extra RAM laying around and since both the x58 and x79 can use DDR3 I can test if the board works and the CPU. Or I would get the the PSU, GPU etc. now and still be able to test those with my rig..I think the ROG board doesn't need CPU or RAM to see if it works or not.

As for water cooling parts, hmm that could be tricky, you pretty much have to get the whole set-up from the get go cause the all essentially need each other e.g need tubing for fittings, fittings for blocks.. pump for res.. Radiators for what ever... So with that I would get the whole shabang with that.

So if the money is burning a hole in your pocket and the deals are too good to pass up, go for it man!!

Good Luck and have fun.

Details of warranty is what you need to pay closer attention to. Most of the retailers give you 30 days to return the product. Warranty issues are a completely different matter and quite a few component vendors ask you to RMA to the place of purchase and not the manufacturer. Check those details and buy your parts accordingly. Newegg and places like that will work with you so they can build a reputation for repeat business,

Thanks for all the feedback, especially the Amex comment. I totally forgot about amex return guarantee. I did start ordering parts, all on amex.

Sorry for the late reply, work and grad school finals have had me working round the clock trying to stay on top of stuff and havent had time to get back on here.
