Oh my god this is like arguing if people like stickers on cars or not. Its all personal opinion and the only one who cares if you do or dont have an anti virus is themselves.

Every memory-resident program you install on your PC takes up space and uses the CPU, and this effect is compounded when the program intercepts system calls to read files and do other things, adding in code branches that don't need to be there. It doesn't take a genius, or even a technically-minded person, to see the effects. If you think that the slowdown is worth the protection then fine, but that doesn't mean it's the case for everyone. There's no such thing as a 100% resource-free program, whether it's anti-virus or not.
I also don't get how I'm coming of with a 'holier than thou' attitude, when you're the one sitting here professing about how the only opinions that matter are the opinions of the people who use them. Anyone who chose to stop using them automatically has "no experience", and therefore has a worthless opinion.

If your computer is A) so old its being slowed down by a A/V you need a new one or B) brand new I and ur seeing really high resource usage something else is going on besides the A/V. I mean really, when I was running my Socket 939 Athlon X2 3800 dual core I could run a virus scan and still surf the net and burn a CD and this was with 2GBs of ram. Prebuilt desktops give away tons of memory for little to nothing. Not using A/V because it a resource hog died about a few yrs ago. I mean I hear norton has even gotten better.

Are you putting MSE on 1ghz single core computers with 128mb of ram? MSE is the least system hogging av out there. Everyone says every AV program is system resource heavy.

The slowest comp in the house that has it installed is a netbook /w intel Atom 1.6ghz, one of the first atoms that are single core with 1 core 2 threads and 1gb of ram. It never slowed down or have it performance effected by MSE or any other Anti virus I had on it. Sounds to me your clients after you clean their comp. Get it junked up again by spyware and mailware.

You Welcome to run all you want without a anti-Virus. But I rather be Safe then sorry, Which why I always run my main comp with a anti-virus installed. I dont care if there some kind of silly cool factor going around where you gotta run without one to look cool around fellow computers or friends. I only gotten a virus once, that was a long time ago from a floppy disk, when I didnt have a anti virus installed. Since then I learn if you want your files safe you should install a anti virus.

if that means people looking and laughing because I have a anti virus install, well let them laugh. At-least when they get a virus and there punching their computers. They will wish they had them installed to as that virus can come from any thing,Floppies, cds, usb flash drives as well as other people using your comp.

Does anyone know if they are planning to make this work on WHS 2011?

For those who say 'I don't need antivirus programs, I'm a careful browser', what happens if a major website gets hacked? For sure it's rare, but it does happen.

That's the reason I run AV, just the 'what if' scenario. I don't generally go downloading things, but what about when I get emailed a document or other file for work? How do I know it isn't infected?

I think it's naive to run without any form of protection, as even 'trusted' sources can end up distributing malware, as software updates have been known to in the past, as well as obviously any files originating from a different PC (friend, coworker etc)

Well MSE runs fine on my Windows hard drive, no problems,no slowdown....but the only reason I boot into the Windows hard drive is if I want to play one of the games I have installed on it.
My computer boots into the Linux hard drive from the get-go, and with the out of beta for Linux Desura gamesite, I may end up leaving Windows altogether lol.

But MSE is light and good.

Don't care about this beta though, or the fact that it detects malware and removes without asking you...not good.

Exactly why I won't use it unless you can force it to prompt. Don't want legit files wiped out in the background.
