Wait, so you're getting a Noctua NH-D14, but not an unlocked CPU? I can understand you wanting to cool the CPU properly but the Noctua NH-D14 is overkill if you have no overclocking plans. You may as well buy a CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Evo instead and save a bit, considering that at 2TB Caviar Black is $280.

I believe that the noctua would help reduce noise. I could even undercoat the i7 and still be fine. And having allows for the ability to overclock in the future if he decides that he would like to.

-for a single gtx 580, 750 should be sufficient. if upgrading in the future is planned then grab a 900W gold rated.
-spend the extra bit of money and go for a unlock 2600K processor, or even downgrade to the 2500K, its a much better value.
-the d14 is a great cooler but its hard to justify the price when all in one water cooling solutions are readily available, for that money you can grab a H70 or spend a little more for the H100. even a H60 can do a good job on a unlocked cpu.

throwing together a machine based on whatever is cheapest is never a good idea, just take your time and seek out deals on the parts you want. happy hunting!

First off with a 2600 it doesn't allow him to overclock in the future. 2nd, have you considered the 27" samsung PLS display, its only 2560x1440 but i think it looks amazing, and its only 900. Third, I dont think that build will be playing games at max in 2 years at that resolution.

I personally would be little disappointed if i forked out 3k for that, but I guess thats why you are here, to make small tweaks to the build plan so that he gets his 3k worth. I dont see why you dont want to overclock? Its free performance, everyone does it and still has their cpu years later, just make sure you dont go overboard and ship it out stable and no problem. Has he specifically asked for no heat and low noise or is this just an assumption?

Its hard to make suggestions not knowing what your client really wants. Normally if its for gaming heat and noise isn't first priority.

Do you think he will be happy with red ram, blue motherboard? I know i wouldn't be, I like to be proud of my computer and show the world like most of us here. In order to do that it needs to look nice.

Also with current HDD prices does he really need 4TB straight up? maybe you could give him a 1Tb and tell him to come back when its running low and you will hook him up when prices are better.

If it is just purely for gaming maybe an i5 is better and then dual 570's or 6950's? (unless heat is an issue)

Now im not trying to question you as a PC builder, or be mean or anything. These are just all things you have to consider.

So hopefully my post here will help you and your client. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Everyone has different opinions but I'm running games on a 30 inch (2560 x 1600) with 2 gtx 580(3gig versions). My CPU (990) is o.c. To 4.5ghz. When I was running a single gtx 580 (1.5 gig) card my system struggled to run at MAX settings during gaming.

I sold that card and upgraded to dual gtx 580 lightening (3gig) and now I'm able to run every game out at max settings including AA ect. I am not sure if it's the faster clock speeds, the sli config,or the extra 1.5gigsof VRAM . I expect they all play their part. Most likely the sli is helping the most because only shogun at max settings even comes close to approaching 3 gigs and by then the game is GPU limited anyway.

So don't expect to run games at max settings at that resolution rightnow, never mind a couple years from now.

P.s. I went for the 3gig cards because sli limits your ram to the one card total but it still is borderline over kill for one monitor setups. I'm not sure about multi monitor setups because I have never ran one. Also I went from the evga 580 to the MSI 580 and hands down I Ike the MSI card better. Everything from the cooling, to the lights, to the performance. Again this is my opinion and I'm very happy with my current setup. Good luck with your build.

Thanks for your response, I'm trying to benefit from those who have greater knowledge than I. Yes absolutely if it will not run the games with max settings at stock then we will overclock. I do not agree that more power is always necessary. I will ask him about noise but I think that that will take a back seat to performance.

From what I'm hearing however, the cu is not the bottleneck here but the GPU.

So a dual GPU solution or a card with two processors will be necessary.

I have the u3011 (got it for $850 via eBay via dell warranty long story) and he likes it. He said he wanted to get that one if possible. However there is no point in buying a monitor that his GPU will not drive, so I will talk to him about the Samsung but I think if you're going to spend over $500 on a nonhdtv monitor you should go Ips.

I thought that the k simply meant unlocked multiplier, making an easier overclock. I thought that you could overclock any 1155 cpu as long as you had a Z68 motherboard.

Nope 4TB is overkill and if I can't get them at those prices then I won't bother I have a 1tb that I can throw in there for now.

If the i5 2500k Is a better value and will not become a bottleneck for gaming over the next couple of years then that is a better move.

It sounds like the consensus would be to go with an i5 2500k and a dual GPU or single GPU with multiple processors.

I don't know, g skill makes ram with blue heat sinks or I can replace the heats inks if color is an issue.

My sig rig is out of date I should fix that.

Thanks for the continued suggestions!

Well the i5 is basically the same as the i7 without hyperthreading, games dont use hyperthreading (not yet at least). An i5 will run 2 cards fine without being a bottleneck, May have to overclock it for x2 580's. As for all intells new card being overclockable i think you are right but the K series are much easyer to overclock, only cost a tiny bit more, and if he wants to upgrade to ivy down the track will hold a lot more resale value which is something to consider if he is going to upgrade at all (but sounds like he wont).

As for ram and heatsinks, corsair vengeance comes in black, red and blue heatsinks, doesn't cost much and is solid ram.

Also if you can get a Seasonic, corsair or XFX PSU for a similar price you will be better of in that department.

Now for the screen. Its over 500 but its still over full hd, same pixel density as the 2560x1600, just that is 16/9 instead of 16/10. I prefer 16/9 and with the bigger resolutions and screen sizes you dont need that extra space of the 16/10. As for it not being IPS it is PLS which is a newer better screen technology. So its actually a step up in my opinion.

Watch these.
