a 7200rpm hdd has no significant performance increase over the PS3's original 5400rpm hdd. it will not take advantage like a computer can.

so I'd avoid a 7200rpm hdd, and rather stick the up-gradable 5400rpm HDD such as 500 or 1TB for now. tongue.gif

Completely depends on the game. Some games have built in wait periods and won't see any increase at all, but others will have a massive difference. If you look around at reviews that have done this, you'll see what i'm talking about.

Good point. You're talking about MGS4 en GT5. They're significantly faster than with "normal" HDD's. But probably only a handful of games benefit from an SSD. And not everbody has that handful of games on their shelf. So it's not worth it in my opinion. Just be patient and wait 5 seconds longer.

Yeah, I went back and forth about whether or not to swap to an SSD. In fact, I have the Crucial M4 sitting right next to me in the box. If my hdd ever took a dump, I'd definitely put it in, but I think I'm going to keep the 160gb drive in there for now.

I've had 2 HDDs go bad in one year, one was the original 120GB HDD, but the second one was a 500GB Western digital. I never shut my system off improperly. One day, it just started giving a triple beep on shut down, then a few days later the HDD would fail. This happened twice. I'm not sure what the PS3 does to HDDs, but to burn up that Western Digital, it must be really hard on them.

Sounds more like you got a faulty PS3 that's doing something to it.

I have never had a HDD fail in a PS3. Not my old 60GB FAT and not my current 320GB SLIM. And I use it quite a lot.
