[Solved] Noob needs help installing ASUS GTX 550 Ti

Thread Starter
Well what the title says lol tongue.gif I just got it and I can't seem to get it to work. I have done what it says in the book that came with it and it is still not working. I am installing it in my sigrig. How do I get it to work. Is there something I have to change in the BIOS?

At the moment I got it set so that it should work with both on-board graphics and PCI graphics but it didn't work for either of the two when I had the GTX 550 Ti installed. I am not a complete noob I did put it in the right slot (there only is one in my mobo laugher.gif ) and I did plug the 6 pin PCI power connector.

This is the first time I have ever installed a graphics card from scratch so I don't know what I am doing frown.gif

I can't watch youtube videos because they won't play for some reason. If I could then I would have watched some videos for installing one biggrin.gif

Are you saying that the PC will not POST with the card installed?
How is it not working, can you describe the issue exactly?

Have you installed or updated the latest drivers for the 550 ti?

It's powering up and it is posting I know this because when I uninstalled it, I got that "Windows 7 did not start properly last time" message and I heard the BIOS beep. I have also found out that the DVD that came with it doesn't work in my external DVD drive so I am copying the contents from the DVD onto a USB drive right now on a different computer. I will install the drivers when it is done and then I will reinstall the card.

Did you disable the onboard GPU of your motherboard via the BIOS?

Nope. I got it set so that it uses both on-board and PCI, does that matter?

Should I install the drivers before installing the card as well?

You need to plug the DVI cable into the 550 Ti. A setup as you describe it (Lucid Virtu) is only available on (some) Z68 boards.

There's your problem ,unless you got the an AMD/ATI GPU for Hybrid Crossfire, disable your IGP (Integrated Graphics Processor) after attaching your GPU.

Edit: Yes, also transfer your Monitor's VGA/DVI cable into the GPU.

I wouldn't even bother with the drivers on the CD. I would just uninstall the drivers for the onboard graphics first (go to device manager, open "display devices" or whatever it's called, right click the onboard graphics and choose uninstall), then reboot the computer into the BIOS, change the settings so that the onboard is disabled and it's set to use PCI-Ex16 by default, then shut down, slot the card in place and plug in the power cable(s?). It should detect the card automatically at startup and boot up with some crappy resolution, then Windows should automatically find the drivers online, download/install them and ask you to reboot. After a reboot, it should be fully functioning.

That should be enough to get things working anyway.

EDIT: Oh, yes, you'll need to transfer the video cable into the GPU's output, rather than the onboard's one.
