GTX580 1.213v how safe is on Reference cards with water cooling for gaming?

Ok, i just edit my own bios with a higher voltage unlock (1.213v) in my evga reference cards. I notices that some asus GTX580 goes 1.213v or well beyond that voltage (1.293v asus matrix platinum). How much voltage can the gtx 580 handle to run for gaming. Right now i'm 960mhz with 1.175v on both cards. Yes i know i void warranty. i'm on watercooling right now my max load temp on both cards are 50C.

My only concern is that non-reference cards have purposely designed PWM and voltage regulation to handle higher core (and/or memory) voltages. Cards like the Asus DCII/Matrix, MSI Lightning/XE and EVGA Classified have more robust phase design so that higher voltages can be run without much worry.

While the reference GTX 580 PCB design is no slouch in the voltage regulation and power phase management departments (nothing like the initial reference GTX 570s), I would be concerned over long-term effects and potential degradation resultant from your running over the recommended 1.150v max spec. Your temps are nothing to be concerned about though.

I think everything under 1.15v should be safe area, but that doesnt mean that you will ruin anything when going above. So far I havent seen any dead 580's so you might ok.

Just remember that there are more than the GPU than needs cooling. In your case your GPU is at 50c, which sounds safe, but what about your VRM. The VRM part is what I would be worried about, so check temps on those, eventually after half an hour of battlefield 3, no vsync, highest resolution, details etc., to see if they are burning.

In the early days of the 500 series, a lot of 570gtx'ers burned their VRM chips when overvolted. The GPU however, should be fine.

I run 1.21v 24/7 on my 480s.

It's not even a concern with me. I believe 1.21v is safe if you have your cards watercooled with great temps, which you do. I've benched with 1.25 and 1.27v on my cards recently and a couple times before, no harm done.

WOW I must have a golden card... I got to 925 on stock volts last night without a single issue and card didnt go over 40c on water.

I went to 1.025v and got to 950... I plan to shoot for 1.05v and 1Ghz tonight... and keep going from there... cant only imagine the limit at this point and researching what people are getting. not sure what I should set memory to? I have a EVGA GTX580 3GB model with a EK-nickle block.

So personally 1.213v is insane and I wouldn't ever run it. not worth burning up or degrading a $500+ video card wink.gif
