One of my cards isn't responding (5870 crossfire)

Hi,

I have 2x5870's in crossfire and one of my cards just stopped working. To figure out what card was giving me problems I inserted each one on their own and narrowed it down to the card causing the problems. When I turn on my machine with the card running on its own the fans turn on and the system seems to be running but nothing comes up on my display. Anyone got any idea's or is this card dead for good? sadsmiley.gif

From the test you have done, yes it's RIP.

Got any recommendations for a new card I can get that would give me performance similar to my crossfire or better? I don't want to spend over 600 canadian.

A cheaper solution is get another 5870 or sell the 5870 and replace it with 2 6950 2GB.

I think I want to get into the new series so I might go with the 6950's. Lately I've been having a lot of issues running newer games like skyrim and battlefield 3 using my ati cards. (required quite a bit of tweaking to get them working ok). Have any nvidia cards you would recommend?

I had the same thing happen to one of my 6950s and I sent it in for RMA.

I would personally wait for the new ATI 7000 series to come out within the next 2 months to see what they offer. There isnt really a single card out now that will beat your crossfire setup, but if you wanted to go with 1 high end Nvidia card, I would probably say the 570 is the best for the dollar now. However, with the 7000 series coming out for ATI, I hear the 580 will be dropped to 380 USD. Overall, wait til at least January and see whats out, and I don't think you will be sorry you did!

GearXS has an OEM 5870 on sale for $149.99 shipped. I bought one just to try out 3-way CrossfireX. smile.gif

I've been having a lot of issues gaming in crossfire with my 5870's and I kinda wanted to move away from them. I'm not sure if it had anything to do with the rest of my rig but the stuttering in games sometimes just got unbearable. I have my 955 overclocked to 3.8 ghz and I was told it's bottlenecking the cards but i'm not really sure if a cpu bottleneck would cause that kind of behavior.

edit: I will probably be upgrading this weekend, if the 7000 series is as good as everyone thinks it will be I will give my girlfriend the cards I buy and get new ones thumb.gif
