Declaration of Discontent - Page 5

@Masked: From the sounds of it you make it seem like doing a PC game is impossible whereas console games are cookie cutter copy and paste jobs. I may have dumbed that down to the extreme but it comes off like no one ever/does general engines anymore. Also, if it's not the devs/studios fault for glitches then they should speak up. I don't remember hearing anything saying AMD/Nvidia were to blame for Rage at release (probably because of biased press) but I doubt no one would report on that if the devs spoke up(there's incentive for the press to be the first with that too). It's both parties (devs and GPU makers) faults. They both deserve the blame for when those things happens (you can decide for yourself who is more at fault then). If the devs want our support than they need to enlist it. I can't complain/bother nvidia if I don't know they dropped the ball.

As for the piracy thing. I'm siding with Gabe on the whole DRM created a greater issue out of it than it had been before hand. To me piracy and theft will always exists due to the pure freeloaders who never would pay no matter what you tried to do to make them. But it seems like devs focused on trying to come up with ways to make them pay and forget about the rest of us who actually pay. Diservice your customer and what do you expect them to do? As I've said before I'm not buying a few games because my experience with DRM in general and the specific DRM they're using has been traumatically annoying and frustrating. As for you mention about the buyback/sell/trade in with Gamestop. I again wonder why devs punish PC gamers alone. We can't do any of those things. Yet we shoulder the price of it in DRM and no resale or refunds. I want fair treatment from the devs. If console gamers can rent a full copy of a game then I want that ability too; or you shouldn't allow it on any platform. Unless a beta gives full access to the "gold" status of the game then it's not the same as renting. I'm glad there's beta testing and I'd be glad to help for free but it's not making up for anything. It's not an equivalent trade off for what we lost.

I'm not dismissing your points. I'm just saying that without equal treatment across all platforms the devs/publishers should not expect equal treatment in return.

Good write up. But utterly pointless. They never listen. Easiest thing to do is to give this out to smaller developers first. Ones that will listen.

Try these guys, as they basically control how a game works and functions. Their technology is in nearly every single game out there.

But really, 99% of games are now made for consoles, ported to PC. Crytek used to be the only true PC developer. But you can see how bad Crysis 2 is.

PC gaming is dead. PC's are dead.

It's all going to be cloud computing and storage. Dumb terminals in your house and all of your data on a server somewhere where the government can secretely find out what you do on the net and what you have. Then slap you with taxes for whatever you do, etc.

Everything will get worse.

Not a rant, not down. Just the sad truth.

But hey, at least I can play Battlefield 3 without having some ******* in there too. Only upside to PC gaming aside from being free... for now.

Spam Rockstar with this. Dont stop till they reply.

Our studio's first game (working title "The Crate Escape") will be made for PC first (through Steam, D2D, and GOG), then ported to XBLA, and we'll try to adhere to what we've outlined here.

Proper Keyboard and mouse support. flexible key bindings and no forced mouse smoothing.

If a game can greatly improve with support over 2GB Ram, don't limit it (Skyrim related, no idea how to word that effectively)

Get feedback from the community. if your going to add dinosaurs to a GTA style game. i think that will be an important thing to make sure thats what is really needed for the game, and if it will be something gamers will enjoy (bad example... but it should make sense, if someone can word it better)

Save Games!.. Make them easily accessible / findable e.g C:\Users\*USERNAME*\Saved Games

Valve is no longer a true PC developer? o.O

I completely agree with what you're trying to do here Phaedrus2129.

Here are my concerns though.

They won't listen period.

When I played CoD professionally we've had a few ground breaking mechanic issues which still exists. Left Leaning in CoD1, Prone to Crouch/Standing up in CoD2/4/MW2/BO/MW3 and any future titles they make.

The CoD1 Left Lean issue was a rather ground breaking issue, that was very hard to rule during competitive play as it could be done by accident. (The way it was found out). Competitive players are even a smaller market, but is honestly what keeps the game alive. Without these players, games are pretty much dead as there are many players out there who strive to become a professional player and a legend in e-Sports.

Took multiple emails from not only the leagues, but also from the developer of Project Ares Mod also known as PAM, the competitive plugin for the game, and others who wanted the game to succeed as a e-Sports title. At last, the developer of PAM flew to InfinityWard headquarters and actually told them exactly how to fix it, for them to finally make the move. Unfortunately even though the fix was handed to them it was not until the next title Call of Duty 2 where it was finally implemented.

Call of Duty 2 had a vertical lean issue. Again another issue that halted the growth of the game due to another bug that was very hard to rule out in competitive play. Multiple emails, and even jockyitch who is one of the most known CoD webcasters and who also runs BASHandSLASH have tried to get the issue across InfinityWard for them to fix it. InfinityWard continues to ignore it.

Since then there have been multiple attempts which absolutely no luck.

No way am I trying to steer you away from this, it's just the fact is that they really do not care. Especially when it's issues like these, that they're just completely ignoring. Or even when they're given a fix, it must wait till the next game.

My only suggestion is:

Allow players to save the game at any point in the game,
and not have to go to a specific location just to save.

It takes up a lot of time and is annoying because we have to do it over and over again.

Examples of games that could have been great but did not allow save anywhere:

Batman Arkham Asylum
Dead Island
entire GTA Series

I'm all for this smile.gif

Only thing I want to see in games these days is more non-linear gameplay. Crysis was amazing because the amount of ways you could hunt your enemies was only limited by your imagination. Almost no other games have that these days. I agree with being able to save anywhere, it would take away headaches trying to get to a checkpoint.

If the game is sold as a digital download, it would be nice to be able to verify once, and not require a persistent internet connection, regardless of mode (MP/SP).

And I know it's sort of cliche, but a Zombie Mode in a game like BF3, Amnesia, and many other focused games would be great fun smile.gif Imagine taking out a mob of the undead with morters!

Although I completely agree and will gladly sign this, you have to remember that from a business standpoint, they can't dedicate an entire section of developers for just the PC. Granted, porting with enhanced features or at least modding tools is viable. I hate to say it, but consoles are supreme in the realm of business.

Subbed so I can see where this is going.

EDIT: The best way to get the point across is to cut their money flow. You'd have to get a massive boycott among PC gamers for that to work though.

Honeslty Piracy would be cut down DRASTICALLY if all games had demos, or offered discounted versions for just multiplayer or single player versions.

A lot of people who pirate gaems do it to try out the game before they shell out a NON refundable $60 for it.
