My HD 6970 Reference does 1Ghz and still stay under 80C.

For $300usd you can buy brand spanking new 5970 off newegg and annihilate a 6970:

An what that's like $50 cheaper than a standard priced 6970?

A HD5970 is a horrible card at this point of time..

Issues all over the place with CrossFire support in drivers, heat and power consumption and weak tessellation DX11..

Not to mention micro stuttering and only 1GB of VRAM per GPU..

For comparison my GTX480 has better min FPS for example in Crysis than a HD5970 and min FPS is what counts..

CHEERS..

I was looking at that. But I always thought the 5970 was inferior to the 6970. I plan to keep the graphic card for atleast 3-4 years. So I need one that can keep up with future games.

Thank you. I heard about these issues but I couldn't really out my finger on which card it corresponded to. I wanted the 580 but it was way out of my budget. I was looking for a card between $450 ish. Something between a 6970 and a 580

I know what I'm talking about as I have used a HD5970..

Those were the reasons why I bought a GTX480 and it was my best upgrade ever (and yes I mean upgrade)..

Drivers have fixed many issues, and perform 10 fold on how they did a year ago

I have the Power Color COD edition 6970 comes overclocked @ 940/1425 and works awesome. On BF3 @ultra settings, everything on I get 35-70 fps with a 27" 1920x1080, and never gets above 60c.

I'm not saying that drivers haven't improved until now but still there would be issues with every new game until hotfix comes for CF..

And 1GB of VRAM per GPU is a limiting factor in new games like Crysis 2 and BF3 with max settings and Full HD..

Still it doesn't make sense to buy a HD5970 now, just like it wouldn't make sense to buy a GTX480, when there are newer cards with better tessellation, 2GB per GPU and more power friendly..

I see that you're as an HD5970 owner a bit biased,but that's OK.. wink.gif

And these are limitations of a HD5970, lack of VRAM per GPU and poor DX11 tessellation performance..

Check this Metro 2033 bench (which is VRAM and tessellation hog) and see how it falls behind newer, better single GPU solutions:
