Putting together an Alienware computer via eBay Question

Thread Starter
So as you all probably know, alienwares are freaking expensive, but i recently went to MLG Providence and tried out an alienware m17x that if no one was there you could play, and the experience was amazing, it ran really smooth, you could play basically any game you wanted to at ultra settings.
Anyways after that I wanted a really good laptop to go around but the 6990M and i7 laptops are about 1800 and recently i was browsing eBay(which is kind of sketchy) and I found a barebones m17x(old version i think) and a 6990M

Links here:

M17x Barebones R1:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Original-Alienware-Area-51-M-M17x-R1-Full-Complete-Barebones-Unit-/320799127696?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab11e3890

Radeon 6990M:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Alienware-Dell-M17x-r3-M18x-2GB-AMD-HD-6990M-Video-Card-/330646401135?pt=PCC_Video_TV_Cards&hash=item4cfc0fb06f

Processor(surprisingly you can actually buy this):
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819111025

Total Price(not including shipping):$1109

which is still a lot, but its about a $700 saving(i have all the other things i need)

Now, there are plenty of tutorials on how to put it together and all, but I actually want to know if this will work, I dont know if theres a difference between mobo's or what? and I want to have full confidence this will work before i spend over $1000, so if anyone could help me that would be great

P.S. i'd prefer to stick with a alienware case, but if it doesnt work feel free to give me a link, to let's say a clevo barebones system, thanks for any help. = )

Definitely will need new motherboard and ram. Its likely the power and cooling in the old one are good enough also.

Not worth it I don't think man :/

Too many variables to question here to have a definitive yes to this. Because if the potential problems you will have, and you will have them, Just buy a Sager. Because you still need to buy a Hard Drive and RAM, and the keyboard isn't backlit. tongue.gif Not to mention it doesn't say that it comes with a battery or charger for it either. Adding the cost of all that, what with hard drive prices through the roof at the moment, you are looking at another $500-$600 after all that is said and done. Not to mention not knowing if the 6990M will fit in that machine. The internal workings are similar but the casing is different ever so slightly with the R3.

I wouldn't chance any of this. You'll end up matching the price of a new M17x anyway but without any warranty. No deal.

M17x != m17x

the 6990 and i5 will not work in it.

you need to find a m17x R3 if you want the CPU + GPU to work

i am pretty sure the m17x R2 will support the 6990, but it only takes G1 socket CPUs (i5 2520 is socket G2)

I don't think the m17x R1 would suppor the 6990

TL;DR, what you posted will NOT work
