New MSI Lightning 6970 Problems

I am having some problems with the 6970 I just received. Right as I start playing any game, spots appear on the screen, and then the game crashes. Windows shows a message saying "Display driver has stopped responding and then recovered." I am running the card at the stocks clocks it comes with, 940 MHz. . I have changed the "bios" switch on the card and it didn't help. Also it feels like I am getting high temps with this card, I clocked the card down to the normal reference cards speed of 880 MHz and it is able to run Battlefield 3, but the temp was 72 Celsius with the fan speed at 91%.

I have reinstalled windows+drivers. I have also had a Sapphire 6970 in my computer previously that runs everything fine with no issues at much lower temps+fan speed.

I'm pretty sure I have a bad card as I can't even play games at the stock speed that comes with the card, and I'm not sure if the temps are normal for this card, even with the after market cooler. I'll be glad to give any more information that is needed and any help is appreciated.

RMA that bad boy, seems to be having issues that shouldn't occur. When you down clocked the card did you still notice the black spots on the screen? Also this is all assuming you downloaded and installed the latest drivers.

When I down clocked the card there was no problems on the screen and yes that was with the 11.11 driver.

Wow, you people aren't even trying to help figure out his problem and telling him to RMA.

72C is normal for your card. I have a R6970 Lighting as well. What isn't normal is that you're reporting 72C @ 91% fan speed. Sounds like you flipped the switch to the middle position.

Have you tried reapplying the TIM? Try that and Furmark your card for a good 20mins and see what happens.

You also need to check your other switches on the back of your card and see if they're in the default positions.

Yeah, like I said, try reapplying the TIM. I did with mind and temps dropped 8C from factory applied TIM.

The 72C @ 91% fan speed was with the switch in the normal position with the card down clocked to 880 MHz while playing BF3. Would it even be worth reapplying the TIM since I can't even play games with the card at the stock clock (940 MHz) it comes with? Or are you saying the card getting to hot and that is the reason it crashes at the stock settings it came with.

I just don't want to void the warranty (if TIM affects it) with newegg/msi since it was just bought a few days ago.

I honestly wouldn't touch the TIM on a brand new card thats already artifacting. You could bump something that breaks warranty, etc.

I would try taking compressed air and blowing out the PCI-E slot, or trying another PCI-E slot. I had a PCI-E slot go bad, and this happened. I also had a dirty PCI-E slot and it was causing this exact problem. After I blew compressed air into it, everything went away.

If that fails.. I would return it to wherever you bought it. Don't RMA if you still have store warranty.
