6950 Which to buy?

Thread Starter
I'm looking at some Black Friday 6950's and I have a quick last minute question. I am using my sig rig with one monitor. I plan on using the card for gaming (Skyrim and BF3 are the first on my list).

My main question is: how much VRam will I need?

I can get a 1gb TFIII reference card which would be unlockable to a 6970 and have high overclocking potential due to the good cooling.

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=64182&vpn=R6950%20Twin%20Frozr%20III%201G%2FOC&manufacture=MSI%2FMicroStar&promoid=1055

Or, would it be better to get a 2GB non reference card (not unlockable) with worse cooling but it has 2 GB VRAM?

http://us.ncix.com/products/?sku=59610&vpn=HD695XCNFC&manufacture=XFX&promoid=1055

Thanks for your help!

I would get the 1GB one. Why? You have the benefits of overclocking and better cooling. The 2GB is pretty... but deadly, from what I have heard as it inferior cooling and no overclocking ability. But that's just me. biggrin.gif

I trust MSI to be more reliable and cooler than the other card, but I'm not sure if it's worth it considering it has half the VRAM.
BF3 is known to use about 1GB of VRAM, give or take. It's a difficult choice.

Just had a look and only the less popular 6950's seem to be on sale.
Furthermore, I think I read (had been searching for a 6950 a while ago, ended up with a 570 ^^) that the 1GB cards do not unlock or chances are very low. I also don't think the TFIII is a reference card.

I would go with a 2GB card either way. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and spend some more...

I have two 2GB Twin Frozr IIIs, they're great cards. They stay pretty cool. Might be overkill for a single card setup, unless you've got a tiny case. 1GB of VRAM should be enough for most games assuming you're in 1080p. If you're running 1440x900 you're all set, if you're running 1440p/1600p you'll want 2GB.

2GB might be nice to have for the eventual Skyrim texture mods. One of the reasons I splurged and got the 2GB models.

Twin Frozr III's are not reference, and even most new reference cards can't be unlocked. Don't count on it or else you may be disappointed when it doesn't work. The 6950 on its own runs BF3 and Skyrim pretty well. There's no Crossfire update for Skyrim yet so I've been using just one of my 6950's and it runs well maxed out (1080p, 4xAA/16xAF) 30-60fps at all times. That's with the injector mod and a few others.
