How much VRAM?

Thread Starter
How much VRAM do I need? Looking at getting a card for my single 1080P monitor sig rig.

How much VRAM should I get?

With black friday deals, I have two choices: Good fans on a card or more VRAM. What is more important?

Thanks!

You'd be pretty safe with 2GB these days, but you could get away with less if you want.

1gb would be fine for most games. 2gb if you want future proofing.

How future proof would 1 GB be? Would it be silly to only get a 1GB card today if it will be useless in a year or two?

Thanks for your help, this is my first discreet GPU purchase!

get something with 2GB like a 6970

I'd say getting a 1GB card now wouldn't be a good idea considering many new games are using more than 1GB at 1080p. You'd at least want the 1.2GB you get with a gtx 570, although I'd advise more than that

Games in general haven't been shown to consume vram as much as people though I mean take for example the 6900 series 1gb version and 2gb versions as well as the gtx 580 1.5gb vs 3gb. This of course is because they are using gddr5 so hopefully you can use a safer comparison for choosing a card and make sure you don't get an outdated gddr3 or lower.

Also there really isn't any detail in OP besides running a 1080p monitor which even a 8400gs can drive.

Yes I am looking at a 6950 but my options are good fans but only 1GB VRAM or much worse fans but 2GB Vram.

If you're intending this card to last a while, you'll definitely want something with more than 1 gig. 6950 2gb is a good option, especially if you get one that unlocks. if you go to $300+, the gtx570 is actually better than the 6970 despite having less vram.
