HDD Partitioning, IDE and Windows Trim question

Thread Starter
So I have 1x samsung spinpoint F3 HDD and 1x Crucial 128 GB SSD.
SSD: Will be used for the OS(Boot Drive)
Hard Drive: Will be used for storage.

Partitioning Questions:
1. Is partitioning necessary?

2. Do I have to partition both the SSD and the hard drive?

3. If its necessary, how do I partition the drives?

IDE / AHCI Questions:

1. I know I am supposed to set the SSD in AHCI mode in bios before installing windows, but I am supposed to set the hard drive in AHCI or just leave it at IDE?

2. Will there be any increase in performance if I put the hard drive in AHCI mode?

Windows Trim Question:

1. Is Windows Trim enabled automatically in Windows 7 64 bit for the SSD or am I supposed to enabled it my self? If so how?

No need to partition the SSD. Partioning the Data drive is up to you.

If you want to partition your Data drive you will have the option during Windows 7 installation.

The HDD can be either IDE or AHCI.

Yoiu will not notice any "real world" performance diffence between IDE and AHCI. AHCI does have some additional functions like hot-swap.

Trim will be automatically enabled by Windows 7.

Hey, here are a few thoughts

Partitioning
1.Maybe. In the days of the HDD I would have said "Yes" because creating a small 100GB pertition at the beginning of the HDD and installing there all Win, soft and games would have assured that the fastest region of the HDD (first 10%) are allocated exactly where needed. Now you'll probably have all speed-limited softs and OS on the SSD, so if the HDD is used only for movies mp3s and backups partitioning isn't useful.
2.See above
3.Say you still want the best 10% of the HDD reserved for whatever doesn't fit the SSD. The SSD will have one partition, first 10% of the HDD a second partition and the rest 90% of the HDD a third.

AHCI
1.The HDD and SSD should be in AHCI
2.Not really. If you'd host webservers or a huge database I would say "maybe", but for desktop users it doesn't matter

TRIM
1.Win7 does all the necessary, no intervention required

Good luck with the new setup

Windows Trim Question:

1. Is Windows Trim enabled automatically in Windows 7 64 bit for the SSD or am I supposed to enabled it my self? If so how?

Partitioning Questions:
1. Nope, no major performance increase.
2. Neither. But a HDD may have a slight bit of an increase of performance, but not much. SSDs have no increase what so ever.
3. Not needed, lol

IDE / AHCI Questions:
1. You can only set it to either IDE, AHCI, or RAID, you can't mix it. Set to AHCI.
2. Yes there will be a slight increase.

Windows Trim Question:
1. It is automatically enabled.

Finally, look through my install guide, it will help you a lot thumb.gif

On a side note, if you want to check whether your TRIM is actually on or not (for peace of mind) you can open up a command prompt and type:

fsutil behavior query disabledeletenotify

0= TRIM commands are on

1= TRIM commands are off
