Upgrading from a 8800gt sc

Thread Starter
Going out tomorrow shopping and still stuck trying to figure out what to get. My budget is under $150. Best store I can hit in person is microcenter but will be looking online.

Current rig is below. As you can see my 8800 is holding things back. With this $150 budget though I would like to find something that can play the new games ( new batman, skyrim, assassins creed ) without having to dumb down my settings or send my computer into a ball of flames.

Seen the GTX 550 TI for 130 but seen a few people saying no to that on some threads already ( not sure if budget was in mind on those no';s though ).

I am open to going ATI but would prefer nvidia as I been using them for a good 10 years.

edit: Did just see the Radeon HD 6850 which is roughly the same price and apparently performs better then the 550 TI....might have my choice here.

edit: new budget, $200

6850 or GTX 460 1GB are your two best bets in your price range.

EDIT: Many people OC the 6850 to 6870 performance levels and that's a consideration.

Powercolor HD 6870 is $160/140AR

link

Being the holidays and all, I'd lurk for a HD6870 or GTX 560 [non Ti] for the next few weeks until I found one.

EDIT: With the HD 78xx series supposedly seeing the light of day in December, that should push the current mid-range cards down in price too.

The HD7770 will be the die shrink of the HD6870, maybe it wll be in your price range and the smaller die could help with OCing.

GTX560 is a tweaked GTX460 1GB. Excellent card. So either the 560(non Ti) or 460 will do you nicely. I went from an 8800GTS-512 to a GTX460, and the difference was brilliant.

If you can get the Ti version of the 560 in a black friday deal, snap it up.

See if you can get a used Gtx 260 core 216 if you don't care about having Dx 11. Probably find a few for $50-$100. Its better then the 550 Ti.

I upgraded from the same thing pretty much, overclocked 9800gt. I went with the GTX 460 1gb, great card! And really there's no reason not to overclock it. You can get to GTX 470 performance level without touching the voltage and with very safe temperatures. I'd recommend that card 100%. I'm an Nvidia fan so I'd say that or the 560. If you can't afford it, the 6850 would be good too.

I've seen 460 on craigslist for as low as $125, that's a great place to find used video cards, where I got my 9800gt.

6850,6870,gtx460, or 6790

6870>gtx460>6850>6790 in order of performance (i think) 6790s are $130 and pretty decent

The card is for my friend. Whenever I upgrade my computer, I do his since I built his ( same specs ). Just telling him about the cards and the price range. He can move up to $200 if its worth it, like a card that will last him 3 years at least ( like the 8800s did, they lasted us 4 years so far ).

So its a new ball game now lol. $200 budget!

edit: now looking at the 560 1gb ( free batman with it too $199 / $154 MIR ) or the GTX 460 SC 1GB $169 / $154 MIR

btw, i cant find jack for black friday deals on vid cards =\
