Just installed GTX 580 SLI... Question on performance

Thread Starter
I just installed 2 EVGA GTX 580 3GBs in SLI. I purchased them 2 days ago from the Amazon.com warehouse for 513 each. My system specs are in my sig w/ the exception of having the GTX 580s in place of the 480s.

I think one of the cards might be defective so I'll explain what I've noticed to see if it's normal. I've only played Skyrim on Ultra High settings with them and I show constant 60 FPS except when a screen in loading where it drops to 32 then goes back up to 60 moments later once the screen is loaded. Using the E-Leet from EVGA I've noticed the maximum percentage of GPU 1 used is about 35% and GPU 2 is 0% being used (maybe it's not needed so it stays at 0?).

The second issue I've noticed is the temp on GPU 1 is constantly low to mid 60s and the second is constantly in the low 40s whether I am playing a game or not. I have them in the new ASUS Rampage IV Extreme board spaced out into the two x16 spots. Now the fan volume on the GPU, not sure if just one or both b/c I haven't opened the case up to look into it, is louder than the GTX 480 was at max. The fan volume never goes down, it remains constant. I can hear it in the next room with the TV on making a constant hum.

For those of you with GTX 580s in SLI, do you notice similar performance from Skyrim? For those that upgraded from the 480 to a 580 or 580 SLI does the fan noise sound right? Any feedback appreciated!

Steve

Do you have the latest beta drivers installed? If not, this is why you have no usage on the second card in skyrim. Also, everyones fps drops on loading screens. Nothing to worry about. it does not effect gaming experience. Make sure you have your SLI bridge installed and check to see if SLI is enabled in the driver control panel.

Thanks. I have 285.62 installed for the driver. SLI bridge is installed and SLI is setup in NVIDIA settings under control panel. Does the fan noise sound like an issue. I read a few post about a bad fan controller and buying them used through Amazon warehouse I only have a 30 day return window so want to make sure it's not an issue.

Thanks,
Steve

Describe the fan issue to me in detail? It is ticking or just getting loud in games?

Edit: I strongly suggest you update to these beta drivers otherwise your second GPU will do nothing in skyrim.
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/win7-winvista-64bit-285.79-beta-driver-uk.html

Edit: Test each card on their own to see if they both make this "noise" with the fan. This will tell you if one of the cards has a fan issue.

Do you have both screens plugged into the primary 580? If so, that will explain why the temperature on one is higher than the other and why the fan is always ramped up to compensate. Try a screen in each card.

If not I've no idea - sorry!

Plug 1 screen into the top card and another screen in the bottom card. Please note, the top card is usually 10c higher on average with most dual card setups.

1. Install those beta drivers to fix skyrim.
2. Plug 1 monitor into card 1 and the second monitor into card 2. Check temps. Remember, 10-15c higher on top card is normal.
3. Check each card on their own and see which card is making the loud fan noise. If both do it, it is normal. If none of them do it, it is just a SLI thing (Higher temps and so on)

That's all you need to do. Follow the steps in order and report back.

Thanks. I just ran each card individually and only 1 makes the loud fan noise, the other does not, so I'm betting its an issue with that one card (and probably why someone returned it in the first place). The other card seems to run fine. If it were only making the loud fan noise in games I would take it as just the game, but to always run that loud didn't seem right. On another note the temp on GPU2 did go up when I had the monitors plugged into that card instead, so the diff in temp is just what you said it was from. I'll install those drivers.

Thanks everyone for your help!

Steve

The problem is Skyrim, me and my friends have that drop to 30-32 fps when its loading, its "perfectly" normal it happen to all of us, friends with single 580, me with 570, and a friend with a 560 sli.

We were asking to ourself the same thing when we realize it was the game lol.
