$600-ish budget challenge

Thread Starter
I showed my mom the final cost for a nice i5 build (total $1600) and she flipped. She thinks I should be able to build a computer for $300 and if I screw myself somehow building it, it wouldn't matter so much but $1600 was too much. So my challenge for you guys is to help me come up with a $600 build (rig only) for internet, anime, music, and very light amounts of Dirt 3. Thanks!

You can do much better than Pentium for 1000$. My next i7 build is under 1600$ by a large margin.

I will try to come up with a build.

$1000 limit? Dude, you can do so much better than a Pentium for that. You can grab a Xeon E-1230 for $240 and that's a SB Quad with HyperThreads. Get an Asus P8B C206 board, some DDR3 1333, and a 4890. You can get that done for $800, easy.

I have nothing. No case, fans, heatsink, monitors. Except for that keyboard in my sig. And I only have $600 for the rig and the $400 is for the accessories.

I run an 1156 Pentium, they're good processors.

This is an example build I put together on NewEgg based on personal preferences (Asus MB, EVGA video card, Corsair RAM) as well as reasonably priced.

It has a 64GB SSD, a 750GB HDD, a 560 Ti SuperClocked, arguably the best air cooler on the market today for overclocking, and an Antec 300 case.

If you wanted a better processor and weren't planning on OC'ing much, you could drop the Noctua and the SSD and replace the Pentium with an i7-2600K.

These builds do not take into account a monitor, keyboard/mouse, speakers/headphones, or operating system.

Thank you! I should have mentioned the $600 build limit (since an IPS takes away from most of the $400) but this is still great.

Edit: Is it better to get a Phenom X3 and unlock it or will a Pentium perform better?

My build I did for you has everything except the monitor.

You can get this 23 inch 1080p monitor http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009266 for 110$.

Swap GPU to this 560 ti http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125363 and save 45$, and swap to this motherboard http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157249 and save 65$. That totals to 110$, so with that 110$ saved you can get the monitor I listed up there.

I saw your $600 system/$400 accessories after my first post.

This is a bit downgraded Pentium build that contains the accessories to complete the build (and the optical drive I forgot on the first two rolleyes.gif).

This one throws in an AOC 2236vw monitor (one of the best in the 22" and under class) as well as a Logitech G500 mouse.
It does downgrade the MB from a ROG board to a P8P67 LE, and eliminates the SSD and the Noctua cooler, but still keeps the 560 Ti and 8GB RAM.

There's still no operating system included in this build.

If you want to get the price of the tower down to under $600, you could do it by dropping to a 550 Ti, switching from four 2GB RAM to two 4GB RAM, an using an open-box P8P67.

You could also do the RAM switch to knock twenty bucks (the cost of the optical drive) off the other builds. I'm preferential to XMS3 RAM, so I'm a little biased. Based on how many people run Vengeance, I'm sure it's good too.

The Pentium is a little out-classed by AMDs in the same price range, but the Pentium build offers the potential to upgrade to an 1155 i5 or i7, which are much more powerful than anything AMD has in that range.
It's part of the reason I didn't spec out an 1156 build like mine - the upgrade possibilities on an 1156 aren't as strong as those on an 1155.
