Might I need a second PSU? - Page 2

From the wall and what your rig actually pulls from the PSU is different.

Here's guru3d's review on Tri SLI 580. Just a reminder they were using the 1366 platform (bit more power hungry than 1155).

While benching (I think with 3dmark) the 580s load wattage was 736w and while running furmark it was 933w from the wall, assuming 85% PSU efficiency the power drawn would be 625w (while benching) and 793w (furmark)

Now your AX1200 is more than capable of running 1200w+ (1489w from the wall). You could overclock those babies to your hearts content and that PSU would handle it just fine! thumb.gif

Munaim was spot on.
Psu rating is dc, whilst you based your calculation on you ac wattage from the wall.
Your psu can actually pull up to 1500w at the wall at 80% effeciency 1200w dc.

His PSU is 80+ Gold, 90% efficient. So 1200W DC would equate to 1333W at the wall. For me that would be too close to the rated maximum for long term use, so I agree with the decision to make more power available. That also allows for the fact that overclocking everything might take the total power (DC) to well over 1200W.

That's what I was thinking. 400W for fans, pumps, TEC + controller, SSD's and BD drive. 1200W for CPU, mobo and vid cards. It'll be more efficient and give me head room for OC's. I don't want my AX1200 to crap out on me after a year of heavy folding.

Sorry to bring this thread back up. But right now with my rig, while folding I'm pulling 1624w out of the wall. If I read correctly, the corsair gets 90% eff. at 1200w. 1624/0.90= 1461.6w from the AX1200.

I think I need a second PSU, but the 400w I got was used in a friends build.

I think I'm now in need of a stronger PSU, and I was thinking either the Silverstone or the Thermaltake.

Which would you recommend?

Too late, got the ST1500. My PSU shut off due most probably to an overload. I'll get some sleeved cables and probably sell the AX1200.

Need those OC's for folding!
