Hitachi SMART Error code mean?

Thread Starter
One of my Hitachi 2TB, H3IK20003272SP, hard drive is giving me a SMART error. Ran the Hitachi Drive Fitness test tool and it gave me a Technical Result Code (TRC) 720023E1, anyone has any idea what this code means?

I have yet to hear back from Hitachi, as they are closed this US long weekend but was curious if anyone on this forum know it thumb.gif.

Thanks

Download CrystalDiskInfo / HDTune and rerun the test. It'll tell you the results that people other than Hitachi can understand.

This drive is part of RAID 10, so I don't think it will work. Sorry should have mentioned that.
Or should I take it out of RAID and make it stand alone and run CrystalDiskInfo / HDTune? Currently I did take it out of RAID and make it a stand alone drive just to run the Hitachi test (its a bootable DOS tool), but not sure if I should let it run as a stand alone in Windows environment, as it might write something on it and further corrupt the data or am I wrong in thinking so?

Thanks

Windows will write something and mess up your RAID array.

You may be able to get away with firing up a bootable Linux DVD (like SystemRescueCD) and then typing in some cryptic smartctl commands to get at the SMART info. It's not as user friendly as HDTune doing it for you, but it won't mess with your RAID...

http://www.sysresccd.org/Download

SystemRescueCD can boot to a desktop. Once you reach it you fire up Gparted to get your drive's /dev/sd@ name. (last character varies) Then you use commands like this from the terminal:

Report SMART health of drive:
Code:
smartctl -a /dev/sda

Run a quick SMART test:
Code:
smartctl --test=short /dev/sda

Run an extended SMART test:
Code:
smartctl --test=long /dev/sda

One of the nice things about SystemRescueCD is if you're totally lost, it also has a web browser. Just navigate to this thread or search Google when you're stumped on syntax. thumb.gif

Kramy, thanks for the above post.
Just tried it, but when I run the SMART test both short and long, it does not give me any report/result of the scan. Just say the scan will take X long will finish in XX:XX:XX.

How do I access the reports?

Sorry I have zero knowledge in Linux OS.
Thanks

2000+ bad sectors. It's safe to say the drive is dying and needs to be replaced.

Those sets of three numbers "001 001 005" are apparently health percentages. I'm not sure what they stand for, but "100%" is probably good and "1%" or "5%" is probably bad. Considering how high the first two numbers are, I'm inclined to believe that the drive is in very poor health.

This also worries me a bit:

I've had drives die with far fewer errors recorded than that.

Thanks Kramy for the report and help.

Sending the drive back to Hitachi for RMA, so should get a replacement soon.

Thanks
