[BI] Amazingly AOL still has 3.5 million dialup subscribers - Page 5

That blows my mind to think AOL still has that many subscribers, and makes that much money still! But compuserve FTW!!

It would be interesting to see some additional data on the customers who still use it, such as average age, gender, and location.

Most of AOL's subscribers are older folk who think they won't have internet without AOL so they keep it, willingly letting AOL bill them every month.

How I know this you say?

I get asked "How will I get internet without AOL?" all the time by old people. I tell them fast internet (broadband) doesn't require AOL's software, all you need is it plugged into the computer and to use a browser such as Firefox.

No matter how simple I say it or explain it, it just doesn't sink in... 3 months later... still using AOL with broadband internet and getting charged for it.

...3 months later "How will I get internet without AOL?"

Needless to say I stopped trying a while ago.

i remember the noise that would ensue when logging on.. was slow as snail also lol..
i was 7-8 when i had it.. my parents switched to something better as soon as it was available (needed to)

I don't even think any of my current computers support dial up without some sort of adapter

Dial-up is a lot cheaper too. I know we were still using dial-up in 2006 because it was a lot cheaper than cable/dsl.

Mid to late 90's we had had Juno for email. You literally opened their program it would attempt to dial up around 10 times before it would connect download the email into an Outlook type program then disconnect. After that Juno stopped that service and we got dial-up internet (you could browse and make dinner before the page was done loading). That was my experience with the internet for the better part of the decade. I hated AOL for the prices and the service for dial up internet.
