upgrading to a smart phone

Thread Starter
so i am finally looking into buying my first smart phone. i work in the television industry and it seems like everyone has an iphone. i have never been good at keeping up to date with technology but i need to start to a little bit. my girlfriend has an iphone and just got the newest one after her screen was all cracked on her last one and she just couldnt take it anymore going 6 months with a cracked screen.

will the screen on the new iphone 4 crack if it took a light drop or beating. my current phone it is excellent condition and has never taken a beating while at work or in the field.

other than the ability to get my emails on my phone and stay organized with calendars etc.. and a few apps geared towards film/video is there anything else i should look at? is there a new iphone coming out soon like a iphone 5 or iphone 4s?

also how much of a pain in the butt will it be to have an apple phone but not really much other apple products. i rarely use itunes and dont have a mac.

im with verizon

Was never a big Apple fan, never really used an Apple product and when I first got one several years back I sold it right away.

The iPhone 4S is currently the newest and latest one.. as far as drops and cracks and stuff.. well it will happen either way. iPhones were never known to be resilient to drops or cracks on their screen.

If you're open to options such as an Android phone you'll have a ton of options that will give you all the same features (and more) than an iPhone can offer, perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S..

Here's an interesting video:

Yes indeed! The Android phones are excellent! The galaxy s II is probably the best phone on the market right now. Personally, I use an HTC Surround which is a windows phone, and i love it! I tried an iPhone for almost a month and just....hated it. Took it back and got myself the surround.

I would consider the HTC surround, the Galaxy S II, and the Samsung Focus Flash. All great devices.

ok i'll make this real quick:

- Iphone screen will crack with a light breeze

- Iphone 4s is already out (only difference between it and the 4 is a talking fail app)

- It's VERY painful to have an iphone if you like to do things your way and customize things. If you know technologically challenged, then the iphone is a dream.

- "I rarely use itunes" lol that's going to have to change, iphone pretty much does everything through itunes, EVERYTHING.

So, my recommendation: Samsung Galaxy S2 its screen won't shatter with a breeze (or even if you drop it) and the screen is way bigger than the iphone's, so you will enjoy videos better, brighter screen too. Plus all the advantages of Android and freedom thumb.gif

id go with the droid razr, the build quality on that thing is phenominal, and it will do everything else you ask. yes, iphones are very fragile. xont get one, its kind of ridiculois how fragile they are unless you have an otterbox case. 60% of the kids i see on campus have cracked screens. razr is light, thin has gorrilla glass, and kevlar on the back.

doh.gif guys the op said hes on verizon.

i am technologically challenged unless it involves video cameras since that is what i work with all day. but yea im less interested in an iphone if they will stick crack if dropped.

i am going to check out those suggestions you guys posted at the store. i dont need a zillion apps but i can take advantage of apps geared towards video and tv. like watching streaming broadcast on my phone to check if the feed is good. the iphone does have Depth of Field calculator app so i would hope so does android. i dont need games on my phone since the main purpose for upgrading is getting my email instantly, staying organized, and other business uses as well as texting since i do a ton more texting than talking. and a mapquest app like the iphone has

thanks a bunch guys. i did not realize how popular the other smart phones are. i thought it was blackberry or iphone and i dont want a blackberry because im not a actual business person but i do a lot of business in a fast pace industry

I agree with everyone so far. I think that people on a computer website are mostly going to side with something other than Apple... and with good reason. The iPhone will break. That's why I see 10,000 "iPhone Repair Shops" around town. Every one of my friends that has one has a cracked screen. I just went shopping for a new phone with my girlfriend on Black Friday. She ended up getting a Droid Incredible 2 bc it was on special for free. It seems like a great phone. The droid razr that someone else recommended would also be a nice phone. Supposedly it's built really well. The salesperson went on and on about some Kevlar covering (I guess in case your phone gets shot??) so that might be an option. The only reason my girlfriend didn't get that one was bc it was 249.99 WITH a new agreement.

I have a windows phone 7. It's awesome. Especially since the new update. Everything transfers so easily between my PC and phone. However, I don't think Verizon has a very good selection of Windows phones so I would go droid.

EDIT: Also, on a side note... why does everyone say the iPhone is the most user friendly?? I think that used to be true but now every phone is set up exactly like the iPhone. They're all just pages of apps. Touch whatever app you want to run with your finger.... They all just seem so similar to me, maybe I'm missing something. If anything, I would suggest the iPhone is easier to use for people who have Mac computers and something else is easier if you have a PC.

You want a phone that you can operate straight out of the box with not to many problems or tweaks and have you get you thru the day without you having to charge the battery up several times. I have a Windows Phone 7 device myself.

I would get an Android from if I were you. The Iphone4s is already outdated. Plus, people only get Iphones to look cool, they offer nothing over an Android phone.

And Iphones shatter super easily. I Threw my original droid so many times and it didn't even get a scratch. The thing that finally killed it after years was it going through the washer while on. Android is by far the best way to go.
