AMD Phenom II X4 970 Black Edition, and more RAM, PSU - Page 3

Ok I understand what you folks are saying about the age of my motherboard. I've found a couple instances where people installed Phenom II X4 processors to the same motherboard I have , although one said the BIOS and windows didnt recognize the new CPU. So could I get away with a Phenom II X4 95W CPU on the motherboard I have now? I dont want to put a whole new motherboard in. Worst case is that ill go with a Athlon 64 or Phenom 64 quad core processor.

Edit:

Does the OEM AMD CPU heatsinks come with thermal greas already applied, or should I buy some???

If I were you with only $175, I would keep your processor, and get a new motherboard with DDR3 memory.

My 2.1 ghz triple core processor doesnt cut it for GTA 4

According to the manufacturer, my motherboard does support Phenom II processors, am I limited to 95W processors or can I get a 125W?

thanks in advance

I would really just be guessing at this point. You can give it a try but as has already been pounded into the ground, there are no guarantees with your old board and BIOS. If you want to give it a shot and have a Micro Center near by you could go for a Phenom II X4 830 for $50. Then if it doesn't work you can save up for a new board, RAM, and whatever else is needed. If you mean you want to reuse the old heatsink you would have to apply new thermal paste, so if you don't have any you would need to get some. Every time you remove or reseat the heatsink you should always apply new thermal paste.

That wouldn't be possible unless he upgraded to a newer AM2+ motherboard. His Phenom X3 2.1GHz is an AM2+ CPU which are not compatible with AM3 and AM3+ motherboards since that chip only has a DDR2 memory controller and those newer boards only support DDR3 RAM.

Well, as has been said before, with the limited info we have on your board we think it can only support up to 95W CPUs.

Well, he's got an 8450, I had that and it's in my brother's rig at current.

$175, I suggest getting an XFX 450w Pro or 550w at most, the 450 is more than enough for what you have, and even should you upgrade to Phenom X6, get the 550w if you think you'll ever get a more powerful video card later down the line, as they come with a 5 year warranty IIRC. They're good quality, but very affordable units.

Also, you're running 2 sticks of 2GB DDR2 800Mhz?

If so, you can go a couple of routes. Firstly forget adding another stick, 2x2GB will have you still running in Dual Channel and should be just fine as long as you don't have Photoshop CS4, Skyrim, 15+ tabs of Chrome and Media Player running at the same time (Like I do, I churn up 3.8GB+ of RAM doing that).
There's not a substantial difference between the effects of DDR2 and DDR3 RAM when you overclock the FSB/HT-Ref of the AMD chips.
So, forget RAM, forget a Phenom II X4. I suggest getting a good but cheap, used Asus or Gigabyte AM2+ Motherboard, and sticking a used Athlon II X2 in it.

The Athlon II x2 (240 or higher, heck even a 215 beats it and can be unlocked to a quad IIRC) will pretty much rinse your X3 in everything. And you'll be able to OC the Athlon to 3.5GHz or so with a 2.5GHz NB, killing the max OC of 2.6-2.7GHz of that 8450 and in performance.

I'm pretty sure that can be done on the budget you have? And the PSU is really, really important if yours is as old as I think it is, and as piss-poor.

For the money you have to play with, that'll be a pretty good performing upgrade compared to what you have. When I ran this 545 as an X2 when I first got it, the speed was incredible compared with my overclocked 8450@2.5GHz.

Other variables would be to get an Athlon X3 and a Motherboard with a 710 SouthBridge or higher and try for an unlock, or a used 545/550/555 and again hope for an unlock. Or hope for a used 955 to come along for the right price.

[EDIT] Actually what Ben above said would be great, an x4 830 (basically an Athlon X4 with Phenom badge) and throw that in an AM2+ SB710+ Mobo, new PSU. Win. You may even be able to unlock the L3 on that x4, either way it's win.

Ok, getting a new motherboard is out of the question right now I would like to get a Phenom II X4 960T but I know my BIOS wont recognize it but it will still be used (what I have learned from many folks in my situation) Should I go this route? or get a older processor that will work?

sorry for all the questions redface.gif

Even an older Px4 will be outperformed by an Athlon II X2. Get yourself a cheap AM3 Mobo, some DDR3, and an Athlon II. You can upgrade your CPU later without the need to buy a new Mobo and RAM.

Depending on your type of windows you had might not need to reinstall.

I had switched motherboards and CPUs 3 times with the same install with no problems. Only when I switched the last time to an Intel platform did I notice any problems.

You should be fine... If not i'm pretty sure there are ways to force a driver check at next windows install. Can't remember how to do it off hand but if you were to ask the right people it'd work out fine.Something about deleting something from your registry...

As mentioned a billion times already: it probably won't work. Either you accept this or go buy the CPU and risk buying something that won't work on your motherboard. AM3 motherboards can be had really cheap.

Also what? Installing a new motherboard doesn't require you to reinstall Windows and all your files, that's the HDD. thumb.gif
