I'd recommend the Canon Powershot G12

Review

Professional Compact.

This camera offers full manual exposure mode so you can learn all the functions: aperture/shutter/iso.
Exposure bracketing for HDR.
Can capture RAW image files.

Has a 28mm focal length that would cost hundreds on a full frame like the 5d mk II (the camera itself is at least 2k)
Unobtainable on a crop sensor like Canon's Rebel series.

Once you've mastered this camera, you don't outgrow it as it's more practical to carry for travel/vacations thn bulky DSLRs and will work as a powerful compact.
Excellent build quality and will last many years. (10MP is overkill for web sharing)

Cameras don't take good pictures. People Do.

Friend's G11: pic 1 pic 2

I'm sure you can find great pictures taken by this camera online.
Flickr search: G12 sort: interesting.

You can then laugh at all the hipsters that spend thousands on their cameras only to use it on full auto mode.

First off this is the wrong section to be giving out recommendations. But the main problem in your post is the misinformation your spreading.. The 5D MKII kit lens is the EF 24-105mm F/4L and if your willing to spend some more money you can buy an UWA that goes even lower.

As for crop sensors most rebels if not all (can't remember) come with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 which also includes that 28mm focal length that your going on about... If you want to go lower theres the EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 that I personally own..

Please don't talk about stuff you don't understand...

Well. they're all out of his budget aren't they?

28mm f/2.8 is going to cost him. In fact there's no option for that in the EF-S lineup. On top of that he'll need a body.
The other problem with buying EF-S lens is you're locked to that sensor type.

G12 is a solid unit.

And let me clarify. It has the fastest lens @ 28mm you can get without breaking your budget.

Buy it and enjoy the bokeh you couldn't get with spending twice as much.

And why not give out recommendations? Does a thread limit the types of responses we can make?
In that case. Here's my OFFER OP. Advice.

Please don't reply to threads just to point out misinformation. Follow it up with a recommendation that fits their needs (as in read the budget cap).

Spreading misinformation. Okay.

Your kidding me..... EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 which I also own... And whats wrong with crop bodies.. The 7D is a crop body and its professional level gear. The reason why many professionals stick to crop bodies for sports photography is because you get more range from telephotos... I don't even understand why you even want the 28mm focal length... Its not wide or telephoto... and if you want to do portraits 50mm is best (preference)....

Yeah it has the fastest lens for the price but I guarantee you that you will get more bokeh out of a f/5.6 from the kit lens of a crop body.. Do you even know how bokeh works?... There will be more bokeh out of a crop body because the sensor is larger.. DO SOME RESEARCH..

You can learn controls on a DSLR as well. G12s are good, no doubt, but they are definitely in another class. A lower one.

Que? Every APS-C kit Canon sells includes either the 28-135 or 18-55. I'm pretty sure 28mm is covered, but... what's the big deal with that focal length? 28mm FOV on a G12 is much different than that on a crop camera, etc.

More practical? How do you figure? Because of the size and weight? What you save in convenience you give up in image quality and usability.

What's the deal with 28mm here? It's a focal length that may not even be suitable for the OP.

Lol, what? Locked in? The only situation this statement makes any sense in is shooting DX lenses on FX Nikon bodies.

If bokeh for cheap is what you're after, even the nifty 50 and Rebel XS/T3 is a better choice than betting the farm on a G12.
