Want \ need a new radiator.

Thread Starter
yeah, so i want a new radiator cause i feel that i can cool my components better.
i see those rocking temps of gpu's of 35C under load here, and CPU's that dont top over 40C under load.
and i just want to replace my Black Ice GTs with something more powerfull, i was thinking about a 360 with shrouds on the back of the DF85.

anyone that can reccoment me a good radiator ? and some good fans to go with it ?

this is what i had in mind :
an XSPC RX 360 (or anything better for around the same price)
and some 6x http://www.aquatuning.nl/product_info.php/info/p6624_Scythe-Gentle-Typhoon-Fan-1850-rpm---120x120x25mm--.html

also will it keep my gpu's and CPu's cold (together with a Gchanger 280 rad?

You can also go with the Black Ice GT Xtreme, with your GTS between the GPU's... Not needed but it'll improve temps biggrin.gif

i dont have room in my case for 3 rads i think, so i had no idea where i should mount the 240, i might be able to mount it on the sidepanel but i can only pull air then, not push pull. maybe i could do that tbh.
700

somewhat like that, but it will pull the air from the HD's or i can make it blow the air onto the HD's (its 4HD's)

airflow :
3x front 2000rpm intake's
(soon) 2 outake rear + shourds with 6x ap15's \ RX260. and a 280 push pull outtake on the top.
should i mod it on the side, on push or pull, or leave it out ?

but you think the RX360 with those fans are a good combo ?

and can a 600l \ h pump handle all that restriction ?
thats about 160gph \ 2.66gpm, pump. (if im doing this correctly lol)

does it have to be IN the case? If you're willing to mount it to the exterior or build an external enclosure for one, then you could open up a lot of options for yourself.

I'd rather have everything mounted to the case, and looking "decent" not like hanging radiators of the side and stuff, i know the RX360 will have to be outside on the back, but yeah.
i think i can cut my side panel so i can mount the 200x200, or 240x120 on the side where the redline is, and mount the fans on the outside with grills.
just not sure on the push or pull on them. due to the harddrives being right next to it.

But, i guess your idea was to take a old case and make it a radiator "house" i guess ?

When I said mounted on the exterior of the case, I simply meant attached to the case itself, but not within the confines of the original metal walls, if you know what I mean. For instance, you could place it on the outer side of one of the case walls. There are ways to do that that won't look ugly if you are willing to take the effort.

The other option that I suggested - an external enclosure - is somewhat similar to what you were thinking. Another case could certainly work, but it would be large and could look out of place. If you don't want to waste so much space and want it to look better, you could easily build something yourself. Just big enough to hold whatever you want to put in it, and as complicated or simple looking as you desire. It would give you a couple advantages, such as being able to build a perfect fan shroud and some sound dampening into the design.

Either way, it would solve the issue of "not enough space inside the case", and that might make you want to go for a bigger/better radiator than you would have been able to get away with otherwise.

Aye this, is what im thinking about, but im not sure how to make it look "decent" i was thinking of putting on on the rght side panel of the case, but i dont have any room for a fan between the mobotray and panel due to the mess of cables, can you give me some examples of what you would do on a DF 85 ? or idea's cause im just starting to watercool xD

I would highly suggest you avoid putting it on the side panel directly. It will make opening/closing the case a HUGE pain, and if you're not very careful, you could break the radiator and potentially anything attached to it (fans, whatever component is directly attached via tubing).

The exception to this rule is modding the side panel to be hinged rather than fully removable. It would take some work do do that and you would have to use a sturdy hinge capable of supporting the weight of the radiator while full of liquid. You would also have to use extra long lengths of tubing for the connection to the rad, allowing the "door" to fully open without running out of slack tube. Finding a place to tuck all that extra tubing away when closed would be up to you, but it wouldn't be easy.

Instead, I suggest mounting it to the solid frame of the case. The easy options would be to lay it on top of the case or to fasten it to the back side of the case using a "radbox" or similar. Obviously, if you put it up top, it will have some conflicts with the internally mounted top radiator, making less than an optimal choice for performance. I believe you also said you didn't want it on the back of the case, so your options are somewhat limited if you want it to actually be attached to the case. My personal suggestion would be to build a raised, hollow stand for the case, within which you can place the radiator, and bolt the whole thing to the bottom of the case.

One other option would be mounting the radiator within the hard drive bays. This option of course would take up the entirety of the bays so you would have to find a place to relocate your drives to. It's up to you to decide if this is possible. (keep in mind that there is no real reason a hard drive needs to be horizontal. I've got a velociraptor mounted vertically within my optical drive bays and it works fine, for example)

Yeah, very true, im now thinking about getting a M10 (importing) and 2 RX 360's and some other gear, but its aloot of money so im thinking about it, the thing is with the rad on the sidepanel, i dont think it will be that "sensitive" of wel in the relativity as i see it in, and about the tubing amount. i thought quick disconnects. easy to remove, and no tubing, and this would also mean i dont have to build a system to make a "door" out of it.

the M10 was just a crazy idea which seems to be hell of an expensive one, so im going to think htat one through :| rather not loose an arm and a leg.

the M10 was just a crazy idea which seems to be hell of an expensive one, so im going to think htat one through :| rather not loose an arm and a leg.

quick disconects are great, but keep in mind that they do take some force to actually remove and must be removed perfectly straight (not at an angle). if you were to slip and drop the side panel for example, it would likely not disconnect and would instead yank on the tubing, damaging whatever was attached on the other end. Also without the hinge, there's really no way to promise you you wont end up dropping and breaking the radiator.

If you are willing to be really careful with it, then sure it'll work.

Oh, also they will impede the flow of liquid as the connections are somewhat more restrictive than normal fittings, and certainly more than tubing. On the other hand, it would save having to use extra lengths of coiled up slack tubing so its up to you to decide which is better and its even important.
