Blu Ray Player Issues

post #1 of 4
Thread Starter
TV = Samsung UN55D6000SF BD Player = Samsung BD-P1600

Having an issue with the above mentioned gear. With BD-Wise on last night, the menu on the BD player would either be staticy, like watching TV on rabbit ears, or go off and show a blank screeen with a message on the TV that the TV didn't support that resolution.

I tested cables and HDMI ports and narrowed it down to the player itself. I did a factory reset on the player and that fixed it so it would display the menu with BD-Wise turned on. I then tried to launch Netflix and got the "does not support this resolution" message again. If I tried fixing the resolution in the settings to 1080p, I got the same error. If I fixed the resolution at 1080i or 720p it would work (with the menu and Netflix app). Any ideas why this is not working. I'd like to leave BD-Wise on and not have to turn it on every time for a movie.

As a side note, I did this on the Blu Ray because the Netflix app isn't working right on the TV and I'm trying to fix that as well.

Thanks
~Oni

Well the grainy ness is likely a result of the upscaling through BD-Wise. As the DVD only has the information for 480 lines the Player has to figure out the other 600 lines of resolution. most of the time it does this extrapolation by creating a border around an object and blending it with the surroundings though this often makes thing seem embossed giving that grainy look. There are all kinds of algorithms to try and correct this but none of them are perfect and they still have to make up data. As for your resolution issue BD-wise has been known to have resolution compatibility issues. Apparently it only outputs 720p and relies on the TV to take it to 1080p. Though some TVs don't like this. So people recommend turning BD wise off.

Thanks for the reply, but I think you misinterpretted my issue. I understand the issue with Up-converting a standard DVD, but the issue with grainyness is coming from the Blu-Ray player main menu (where you select Disc/Netflix/Pandora/etc.) and it won't display the Blu-Ray Player menu in 1080p even though the TV is a 1080p TV and the player loads properly with BD-Wise on but Netflix won't load in the proper display.

Any idea what resolution the Netflix app for BD players displays in by default? I'm guessing the problem is my player is having difficulty displaying 1080p on my TV, but not sure why.

I think the default for Netflix is for whatever your blu-ray player is set to. Also, might be strange but try updating the firmware on the TV and the blu-ray player. You can get them from Samsung's site as well as how to do it.

EDIT: I have the same blu-ray player as you just a different Samsung TV, and have not seen the issue you described, but the netflix was weird before i updated the firmware on the player.
