Should I move from 1600 to 2000?

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

I currently run a pair of 2GB G.Skill Rip Jaws at 1600MHz but I cannot push them anywhere beyond the rated 1600MHz. I am getting slow load times in Battlefield 3 and I'm getting frustrated. I was thinking of going to 2000MHz memory, but I am not sure if this will help. I just upgraded my hard drive to a 1TB 7200 RPM SATA III Western Digital for $70, but it didn't really change anything. I only made this move because I needed some space. I don't want to put money into an SSD right now, but I figure that faster memory may help. Here is what I'm looking at. Thanks guys!

Jake

I haven't updated my sig lately, but my overclock is stable at 4.2 right now, so I don't think my processor is holding me back. Thanks again!

SSD won't help with low FPS. You problem is most likely GPU. GTX 460 is a bit low for BF3.

I don't think you would notice anything with a ram upgrade. As I understand it ram is important but from 1600 > 2000 you would only really see something in benchmarks. If you are convinced its the ram run memtest a few times and test it. SSD would be the way to improve load times though without question.

He's talking about load times, not FPS.

As to OP's question. I don't know. I'm using 8GB of 1600mhz ram and have ok loadtimes. Dont really think that affects loadtimes. While i use an ssd for my os drive, BF3 is still installed on my HDD. Can you give me an example of how long it takes you?

Misread it.

If it is load time then yes, SSD will help here big time.

Try to defrag you HDD first though.

So, let's see...

Your ram, at 1600mhz and in single-channel mode, can read/write at 25,600 MB/s (theoretically).

Your HDD, a 1TB drive at 7200 rpms, can read/write at speeds probably around 150 MB/s.

And you think your ram is the bottleneck in loading times???

Faster RAM won't help you.

I run 2133 and used to have BF3 on a 1TB 7200 Caviar Black and I didn't see an improvement until I got my SSD and moved the installation over to that.

You can tell NO difference in 1600 vs 2000 unless your benching, so don't waste you money on RAM unless you getting more to add to what you have. (Recommend at least 8GB btw.)

Get a SSD.

Ram @ 2000 is too much for 955. Will not run @ that speed. 1800-1850 is what you may be able to hit. smile.gif

Get a SSD.

I agree with both of these posts.

The hard drive is generally the bottleneck/weakest link in terms of load times. RAM is generally MUCH faster than an HDD or even an SSD. Buying faster RAM will almost certainly not improve load times to any discernible degree in your case.

A faster CPU may help to some degree, but getting an SSD would give you the most noticeable improvement IMO.

Thanks for those who have helped me here. I'll look for an SSD. This is not the correct forum, but any suggestions on an affordable but decent SSD? Thanks again for the help....
