Keep my i7 950 or swap with i5-2500K - Page 3

Thread Starter
I found a great video that helped me fully understand the new Sandy Bridge CPU's much better. biggrin.gif

Basically it stated what you guys told me. Stick to the 1366 X58 CPU and kids get the i5 2500K CPU. Just a tad under my current i7 950 but still great graphics and unlockable.

Kids will be happy. Hard coming from my rig to something that's not as good. Thier spoiled. They've made comments after coming from a friends house how happy they are to be back at home and on mine. Hence why the second rig and get them off my computer time. redface.gif Thanks again everyone.

If you need a GPU for that 2500k I would recommend a graphics card like gtx 560 ti at the minimum if you want to be future proof.

That 950 is still a really solid chip. I say keep it and wait. The 2500k would only be slightly better and the 8150 would probabally be a downgrade.

I'm keeping the Intel i7 950 with Asus Sabertooth X58 board afterall. SLI my GTX 580 to put me over the top for a bit. Give me 3-4 years.

I've updated my decision and I'm going with the the following:

MSI P67A GD80 (B3)
Intel i5 2500K
MSI GTX 560Ti 2GB Twin Frozr II

Will eventually SLI the card for them down the road when gaming starts to catch up or before they stop production, whichever comes first. This will last them 3-4 years.

I've completely disregarded the AMD option as after much homework it just dosen't seem to be a good higher end CPU over Intel.

Great thread! I'm in the same situation. I have an i7-950 and was looking at upgrading to an i5-2500k. Not because of poor performance of my i7-950 but because I wanted to SLI two EVGA GTX 560 Ti 448 Cores Classified's while I can still get my hands on two of them. My current motherboard wont accept two of them because, one, the EVGA Classifieds are too thick as a result of the fan shroud and, two, Gigabyte put the slots on the mobo in the worst locations (it's an X58A-UD3R).

After reading the responses to the OP, maybe my solution is to find another X58 mobo that accepts two of these EVGA Classified's instead of getting a i5-2500k processor, a new mobo that accepts that processor, and a set of dual channel memory modules (the X58 uses tri channel memory modules).
