Amd Phenom 955 BE @ 3.9ghz bottleneck for BF3 crossfire gaming. 2500k/2600k fixed my issues. - Page 13

My 955BE was a bottleneck in 2010 with CF 5850's playing BF2, how is this news? I tried bumping it up to 4.0 but it didn't help. I wish the x6 had been out then, I wouldn't have spent ~$1500 on an i7 980x setup.

What I've explained is a simple fact and has nothing to do with experience or equipment. Are you doubting this? I can't quite tell if you're trying to state that your situation is possibly different, so I'll state it again. No bottleneck of any magnitude can ever cause a faster part to perform more poorly than a slower part.

Actually it can.

But I don't think that is exactly what is happening here with the OP's scenario. I do think there is a bottleneck, but he shouldn't see negative scaling with a GPU-heavy game like BF3.

Also, for those running Ultra settings on AMD quads or slower.... turn the Mesh Quality down to high or medium... even low. You will see a FPS boost, particularly on large maps with huge view distance and your minimums won't drop so low. Mesh quality is a real CPU killer. I ran tests on my Phenom II X4 @ 3.3 GHz on Caspian border with a 560 TI and lowering that setting made the game much smoother and got rid of low fps spikes.

I currently have a 955BE at stock speeds, and a Sapphire 6950 2gb (non DiRT3 Edition) overclocked to 900/1320, have the shaders unlocked, and I get 50-80 fps with vsync off at default "High" settings. This is at 1920x1080 of course. CPU usage is usually 70%-90%. Doesn't get higher than 90% though. I plan to crossfire in the future, and am wondering if I should go for a CPU upgrade along with another 6950. I have a Gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 mobo, and plan to stay AMD. Any suggestions? If I don't get a CPU upgrade I will buy a hyper 212+ and OC. Also, I havent really tried to push my GPU any higher, its' max temp is about 60C @ 70% fan speed.. Can I go higher? At what point should I get worried about temps? Thanks guys, remember play nice.

You can go higher on that gpu temp. When I was on air, I would hit 80c regularly. As far as the upgrade, a 1090t would be a nice jump and you wouldn't have to buy a new board. Bulldozer seems to be a bad bet right now with performance worse than the x4 and x6 in some cases.

If you are hitting 70-90% util on that cpu now, expect to be pegged at 100% with the overhead xfire adds to your processor. I would definitely grab up a 1090 and overclock it.

I wouldn't have to buy a new mobo either way biggrin.gif Here is the one I currently have. Also, how high was your fan speed at 80c?

How do you guys feel about Piledriver? I feel like it will finally be something good for AMD, that and Windows 8. Should I wait for PD and just OC my 955?Or should I start saving for a 1090t? I will mainly be playing BF3 multiplayer.

If you're happy with your performance on your 955 when you overclock it, by all means stick with it until you are ready to make the jump. I do think you will be a little underwhelmed at any overclock on the 955 though. Try and see. As others have said in this thread, BF3 tends to crash with even a slightly unstable overclock and some X4 owners have had to dial back the OC to run BF3 properly. I honestly think you would be very happy with a 1090t overclocked. They're getting cheap and it would probably last you quite a while. I'm just not convinced on Bulldozer or even piledriver for that matter. They should never have release a new design and then said "well, you'll have to wait until it's optimized by the OS and apps". Not a good way to earn business.

My fan speed was always set at 50-60% during 80-85c benching. They max out at 35-40c on water now. biggrin.gif

Thanks for the fast reply. =D How do you think a 1090t would run with 2 6950s unlocked and OCed? It just "feels" like more of a sidestep to upgrade to a x6. I do agree with you though, AMD should not have released BD at the time they did. However, if I want to stay AMD I just have to deal with it until they make a better move.

The charts I posted a few pages back should put your mind at ease about the 1090 being a side-step.

That on top of the positive feedback 1090 users have given with BF3 and everything else. 1090 should not bottle neck xfire very much if at all. You will just have to take the plunge and find out!

Well, I recently bought this new rig during Black Friday and I ordered my 955 BE off Amazon. You think I could return it and just pay $70 more for a 1090t? Anyone know about Amazons return policy?

Does he need to? I think the crap the OP received from the bias AMD users was undeserved. I would not respond to any of you.
