I've always rooted for the underdog but now it looks like I'll be saving up for an SB-E or Ivy setup.

It depends on how you look at it. Back in the day AMD was better than Intel but Intel used a function in it's compiler (which was supposedly heavily used by devs) which basically said "cripple AMD/VIA" or any non-Intel CPU. Instead of making their own compiler and optimisations AMD just got into a legal fight (directly or indirectly I can't remember) and eventually Intel had to pay.

I feel both sad and upset with AMD. I'm sad they're not doing well. I'm upset that they rest on others to do the optimisation of code so it can use their processors to the fullest(which I'm not sure anything has yet). I'm also upset they call the 8150 a "eight core" CPU when the more I read about it the more it sounds like they tried their hand at making their own version of Hyper Threading. If you look at the 8150 as a quad with Hyper Threading it doesn't seem too bad minus the power draw. But ultimately AMD is a victim of it's own choices and the software community's laziness. If I were Intel I would attack them on the compiler issue because there's no reason someone shouldn't put in the work all-around to make their product the best it can be. And that's what AMD has done.

If you want to understand (probably more than I do) look online for discussions on the Intel compiler bias and the "instruction set wars".

You think Intels prices are high now? Wait until AMD processors are no more. Intel will increase prices 100%.

This sucks.

Also Intel has no reason to keep up with someone else now so their advancing will slow down dramatically too.

I wouldn't consider Intel's track record to be exactly spotless. They've done some pretty underhanded things in the past to earn more marketshare. Like this, and this, for example.

What would be nice is if AMD really does well in Mobile, which is going to be a massive market from here on out anyway, and then they could potentially come back to desktop with what profit they made in mobile. If they go for the gold, get the gold then maybe they can reinvest again.

Someone should find a chart listing the various consumer markets. I think desktop and laptop/notebook/portable are about equal at this point, and mobile is only taking more ground away from desktop.

Just like how AMD invested into ATI and it has done very well for them, I can see the same thing happening with Mobile for AMD.

Sucks for the consumer and overall progress i guess, we'll see where this goes.

Having a focused target can be a good thing.
We'll see how they pull this off.

1 month before that announcement was made, somebody launched this website. It's haunting how right it was. eek.gif
