bigbigadv folding only at 50%?

Thread Starter
Hi all

I used digi's guide to vmware player and running bigbigadv units on a 2500k chip, I now have a 2700k installed but when I go into my vmware player, its running a bigbigadv unit but only uses bout 50% cpu?

I have checked and target NCPUS is at 12, and below is how the smp profile command looks:

35

Any ideas what other setting I need to change?

thanks

Why are you using the VMware player for doing folding, the windows clients offer just as much PPD nowadays...

I used to use the v7 client and had no issues with it

Incidently, you'll probably have to reinstall your VMplayer so it see's the new HT architecture.

I dont really like v7 client, but v6 will work and get me bigbigadv?

I thought there was a significant drop in ppd going from vmware to windows?

Not anymore tbh. I was knocking out 28k ppd on my i7 920 @ 3.8Gigglehertz. My 570 was doing 18k as well if I remember.

For hugeadv units, you need to be using Linux still.

I know that you need to beware of the VMWare version, double check yours with the guide. I believe the newest one is limited to 8 cores. You can doublecheck this when you start the folding client, during the initial load, it will state how many CPU cores you have.

Also, I know that you can just do -bigadv, no need for the -bigbeta tag anymore. If you have the correct number of cores, you'll be assigned the larger units.

He's got a 2700k, it's only got 4 cores with HT so it should max it out.

ive downloaded the v6 smp client, its picked up regular 6984 bigadv unit, its folding on 8 cores. I want to do bigbigadv units, does this definitely require vmware with linux?

That's why he needs to use Linux in order to do the "corehack" if he wants to do the 6903/6904 units. Please stop adding confusion to this situation.

You need to use Linux, either an actual install, or a VM player. You CANNOT get 6903/6904 in Windows.

ok stu cheers

I already have vmware running linux, but it was setup so that a 2500k could get bigbigadv units. I have changed the "target CPUS to 12" and changed smp 4 to smp 8, but it only uses half of each core or 50% cpu usage total?
