HTPC For Brother for Xmas, Need Help.

Hi All,

Well I have done a lot of reading yet I still felt the need to post and get some help.

I am looking to build an HTPC with the following requirements that I can think of...

Essentially the HTPC is to serve to play everything under the sun from a video and audio standpoint as well as play 3d BluRays through PC and a BluRay drive. I bought a full size BluRay 3d Writer on black friday that is capable of doing this, but of course it is full size.

I also want to use it as the home theater speaker system. Meaning I think I would need the right sound card to be able to plug in a nice speaker setup.

I want to make sure that in some fashion the tv can be run through the htpc. I don't necessarily need the capability to use the computer as a DVR necessarily, although that would be interesting, it wasn't the goal of my project. ( he has Time Warner Cable HD Set top box, not sure of model #, trying to get that from him )
i do need however to have it hook up to the htpc for sound purposes...almost using the htpc as a receiver if this makes any sense.

I wondered maybe if anyone else built there's with these things in mind and could list their build?

If not of course any suggestions as to how to go about all this are more than welcome.

I'm not entirely sure if all this is doable or not. I am very new to HTPC but have been building computers for 15 years.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time. I truly appreciate it. Please let me know if I can answer any questions.
Finally!

I suppose you could do that, you would be better off with a standard receiver set up though and just piping the audio directly to the receiver then letting it decode it.

here is something that might work

you are going to need a receiver or an amp. You need something that puts out some power, not just a signal. Or get a logicrap or similar speaker setup.

Yes, I wouldn't mind a speaker setup like "logicrap' or whatever. But I am wondering how do I run all of the sound from TV through these speakers?

Nothing is impossible! smile.gif I guess you could build a box which has a high end sound card and hook it up to 5.1 or 7.1 computer speakers, but it still would not be a an AV receiver (not even close), and would end up costing you much more than an an AV reciever! I haven't tried it myself, has built HTPC's enough though!

Do you have a budget in mind for this build or is money not a limiting factor?

Reason to ask is there are quite a few excellent quality AV receivers (Yamaha, Onkyo, Pioneer, Denon etc) on sale now at Newegg and Amazon, which would probably cost only a little more than a high end sound card like this one, which is what you would need if you are planning to build an HTPC which doubles up as a receiver! Even then it won't give you all the great features that even a mid-range AV Receiver would produce!

I have a Yamaha RX-V671and would highly recommend that or any from the RX-VX71 lineup! Even the V371 is a good buy for $30 more than the sound card! I remember seeing quite a few on sale recently, don't remember the stores but just pick a model and google it you would get some pretty good deals especially as companies are getting ready to launch their 2012 models soon!

So this is just my suggestion, either :

1) Compensate on the AV Receiver quality and just use a high end sound card for your system and build it with the same specs as mine in the signature!, I have added this TV tuner to that build recently, but since you are not big on TV on HTPC you can omit that and just stick to what is here! Would work for what you want it to work, but it all depends on your budget you can downsize some stuff here to add that sound card, that is why the money question was asked earlier! If you can tell us that someone here would be able to suggest an exact build that might be more suitable for your needs!

2) Recommendation - Buy an AV receiver and just use the specs in my build and maybe step down a notch on the APU if money is a constraint and go for a A4 (65W TDP, low power) APU instead and use the on board graphics and sound - my estimate is that you would end up spending the same or lesser than the 1st option!

But hey, this is just my suggestion, I'm in no way discouraging you from building an AV receiver HTPC (you absolutely can try), especially since you are building it for your brother! Please post some pictures and catalog the build so we can all learn something!

Here is one of those AV receiver deals I was talking about, you might want to check out if you haven't already built/bought one!

Pioneer VSX-1021-K @ Newegg with promo code EMCYTZT929 for $299.

That is a high-end (mid range) network receiver in the VSX-x21 line up by pioneer, I'm not the biggest fan of their products but this is not a bad receiver, especially for the price!

i have the big brother 1121 of that reciever. I can say only good things about it. From build quality, the functionality and connectivity. Highly recommended
