Sata 2 Max Throughput

Thread Starter
Hey

I have MSI P55 GD80, it is a sata 2 motherboard. Basically im looking at getting 2 Vertex 3,s, and was curious if they would be severely crippled in raid 0 due to it being sata 2 mobo.

Also anyone know how to find out what raid controller i have on my motherboard?

All relevant input appreciated

Thanks

in theory SATA II is rated for 3 Gb/s which comes out to 375MB/s as there are 8 bits in a byte. So if you look at all the benchmarks the Vertex 3 maxes out at about 314MB/s. So in theory it would not bottle neck but there is overhead to the connection and you never truly get the rated throughput, so it will slightly bottleneck. That being said from some of the benchmarks it kind of looked like the vertex 3 was all over the place in terms of performance. it did great in some but miserable in other tests. It kind of looks like the Crucial M4 is a little more consistent performer. Also are you sure that the SSDs will run on SATA II?

Theoretical max speed of SATA 3.0Gb/s is 384MB/s. In practice I've seen a little over ~270MB/s with my M4 personally.

Where have you seen the 314MB/s on a Vertex 3?!? Look here: http://www.overclock.net/t/1007502/vertex-3-benchmarks-using-sata-2-how-are-my-scores

Also, they wouldn't be crippled, the difference in real world use b/w SATA 2 and 3 is minimal really.

The P55 chipset is your RAID controller. Here is some info: http://www.anandtech.com/show/2973/6gbps-sata-performance-amd-890gx-vs-intel-x58-p55/3
