2500k vs Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition

Thread Starter
My sig rig is pretty old now (around 4 or 5 years I believe) and I was looking to do a new build with a 2500k sometime after I got tax money back. I was planning to do a build for around $500-600 not including the GPU. But AMD just released the prices for their two package deals from the AMD retail pro, and they seem like a pretty good deal.
They both have a Phenom™ II X4 955 Black Edition, and the cheaper one has a Radeon 6850 1 GB card and the more expensive has a Radeon 6950 2 GB card. The prices are $140 and $199 (respectively) with free shipping.
While based off of their Newegg price both of those packages look like really good deals, I don't know if I should get them or do a 2500k build. I don't really have a preference of AMD vs Intel so that isn't really factoring in the decision for me.
I'm guessing this CPU isn't the newest and a 2500k would preform better, but how much difference would I notice between this and a 2500K and would one of those packages allow me to play newer games like Skryim and BF3 with pretty good video quality?

Thanks

2500K if you keep the rig for long. It really much more powerful.

Well I was going to get a 2500K and I thought the 955 BE would be better value for money. It's actually about the same value for money than the 2500K. The 955 BE is cheaper but it is not as good lol.

That's the kind of answer I was looking for thumb.gif. I'm not one to upgrade constantly (even though I wish I did rolleyes.gif) so if an 2500k will last a lot longer then I'll probably go with that.

if you're eligible for amd retail pro then you'll also be eligible for intel's retail edge program. they're going to be selling a 2700k for $100 or so. but the sale starts tomorrow so you'll have to be fast...

regarding your original question, the phenoms are showing their age and already struggling with newer games. i'd definitely get a 2500k.

I wish that was the case, the intel one doesn't accept Target but the AMD one does mad.gif

2500k. It's going to keep up with the latest games a lot longer than the 955. If you look at this benchmark: http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/288?vs=120

It absolutely blows the 955 out of the water.

I was just like you 2 weeks ago, deciding on the 2500k and 955. Glad I chose the 2500k.

well if it makes you feel any better, i'm not eligible for either program lol. either way $200 for a phenom + 6950 is a steal. get the deal, sell the phenom on ebay or w/e, you'll end up with a $100 6950. money saved on that should subsidize added price of a 2500k

I have both, and I have to say the 2500k is so good it is worth every penny, just go with it you will never have to look back smile.gif
