Razer BlackWidow Ultimate help.

Thread Starter
Hello,
I'm buying a new keyboard and was looking at mechanical keyboards after hearing that they are great. I heard they were great for typing and have quick response times, so as a gamer I was interested. I would also like backlighting so that's why I picked the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate . I've read various reviews on sites like Amazon, Newegg, etc. and they had overall good things to say, and I would like to know what you guys think.
So if you own, or have owned, a Razer BlackWidow or similar mechanical keyboard what are your thoughts on it?

Thanks,
Dividan

My room mate has the BW Ultimate and its really nice and awesome to type on. The blue switches are pretty loud but you'd probably get used to it. I currently have a Das Keyboard with the brown switches and its pretty quiet if I don't bang on the keys and bottom them out.

Razer has bad reputation around here. BWU and BWE has glossy interface which attracts dirt, and their backlight will tend to be damaged in a year for a few keys.

For switch quality it is fine. Good for the first mechanical keyboard, after a year you will select other options and never try BlackWidow again.

As I always tell anyone who asks about Razer products, it is a hit and miss with them. Quality control is rather poor so either you get a good product that gives you no problems are you get one that dies quickly or becomes faulty. You're really taking the chances here, so if you really want Razer you should make sure that you can easily return it if there are problems.

For backlighted keyboards, I would suggest you check out Deck keyboards. They make much more solid boards than Razer. Also, check out the guide section for different switch types. Switches that are good for typing might not be as good for gaming, for example, the blue switches in the BWU (ironic, I know). If you are planning to do a lot of gaming on your board you might want to look at brown switches, or even blacks.

I got a BWU Dragon Age II edition on sale for a good price from New Egg a couple of months ago. I'm very pleased with it. I had read several reviews that the BWU keyboards where they had space bar problems and non-functioning keys. I have had zero problems with mine and I love it. I play in a darker room most of the time and the backlit keys are very nice. It does have a shiny surface and I can see where it should show lots of fingerprints. However I wipe it off every couple of weeks and haven't had any issue with that. It's not like I really have a need to touch anything other than the keys anyway. Additionally, I enjoy the clicking noises when I type. Macros are easy to set on the fly and it's very nice for gaming. This keyboard is very heavy. It never moves around on my desk, and sits at a very comfortable angle. I am quite pleased with the keyboard.
