Can I run 2x4GB + 2x2GB both 1600 on same board?

Thread Starter
I have 2 x2GB 1600 G Skill Ripjaws

Can I add 2 x 4 GB 1600 G Skill Ripjaws together with the smaller sticks for a total of 12GB?

or is it better to just run one set?

I really do not see a problem at all, heck it looks like the max for Windows 7 (x64 Pro, Ultimate, and Enterprise), can support up to 192GB of ram eek.gif
All that matters is... Are you sure that your board will support 12GB?

You can, but it's better to run one set because more sticks puts more of a strain on the IMC. Also, unless they're literally identical ICs, you may struggle to get them to play nice together. Remember, there are far more timings/latencies involved than just the published 5 popular ones. As cheap as ram is, I'd sell your old stuff and buy two new sticks of whatever capacity you're wanting. It's just not worth the headache.

They should be fine. considering the speed and size, they should match perfectly fine, assuming the ram sticks are both designed for your motherboard type eg ddr3 for lga775 is different to ddr3 for 1366/1155/1156.

his imc will be fine as long as he doesnt strain it too much, and even then he can always give it a little more voltage. as for the ram itself, feel free to run windows mem diagnostics on it to cehck for any issues. also as for timings, the system will match the second pair's timings to whatever is in the first channel eg 2 sticks of 9-9-9-27 in the first channel and 8-8-8-24 in the second channel will cause the second channels sticks' latencies to match that of 9-9-9-27.

ive had 3 different brands of same speed ram with different timings and sizes and run them based on the highest (slowest cas latencies) to keep stability.

better to not have 1 2gb stick and 1 4gb stick in one channel and another 2gb and another 4gb stick in another.

Yeah, you'll be fine, I don't really see much "strain" on the IMC, imo.

I'm running my pretty much generic 1066 ram at 1600 with 2.6ghz IMC no problem. (Blended with Prime for like 6 hours)

Mixing of RAM is never recommended nor guaranteed to work. Often mixing of RAM simply will not function.

RAM is so cheap right now it's better to buy one, matched, tested RAM kit of the full size you desire. More RAM allows you to open more apps or use larger apps like CAD, video editing, etc. It does NOT generally make any significant improvement in system speed. Most folks only need 4 GB. of RAM for gaming and normal apps. 8 GB. should be plenty for now and the future unless you use the above memory hog apps.
