iTunes in Lion... Does media storage need to be HFS+ Journaled for full speed?

I have a 1TB drive formatted to NTFS and it appears to be working great in Lion except for when I load up iTunes. Whenever I play a song in iTunes it takes about 2 seconds for the song to load. It never did this before, when the drive was formatted to HFS+ Journaled. Any ideas why there would be this lag with NTFS? (Also, I'm running the latest version of iTunes in Lion 10.7.2)

NTFS on mac? I know it's possible, however they have their own file system for a reason. I would be running HFS+ anyways on a mac rather then NTFS.

Should cause less issues in the long run and will probably fix the above issue at the same time.

Isn't NTFS read only in OS X? It may be trying to modify the metadata of your audio files and pausing each time because it can't write to the file system...

FWIW, I use itunes and my music is on a Samba share on my LAN..... it works great.

EDIT: If you must have your media files on a portable drive, use fat32 or the new exFAT files system instead. OS X can write and format drives in both of those formats as can windows....

OK thanks, I'll give exFAT a shot. Couldn't get FAT32 to work because 4GB was the limit per file and I had some 1080 movies that were 10GB each. I didn't even notice that "exFAT" was an option in Disk Utility on Mac. I hope Ubuntu 10.04 can read it!

exFAT is different than Fat32. Fat32 is where you had to problem with 4gb files. But with exFAT there is no problems anymore.
But within Lion there are many ways to enable NTFS for read and write you can add "NTFS-3G" or you can add native tweak by editing the fstab file - http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=186460

I too would recommend exFat, I use it for my external drives as I regularly switch between Mac and Windows. I am currently venturing into Linux and from what I've been able to tell it will read ExFat.

exFAT it is then. Thanks for your help! I shall see how it goes in terms of read/write speed and if there's any significant difference between HFS+ Journaled and exFAT through iTunes on Lion.

I tried exFAT too but unfortunately my music still has the 2 second lag per file when playing them in iTunes. So Apple is basically forcing me to use HFS+ Journaled in order to get full speeds in iTunes, yet I can't browse HFS+ Journaled from my PC. Rather annoying cause I have tried NTFS, FAT32 and now exFAT - oh well, at least I know for sure that my music needs to be HFS+ Journaled when it comes to iTunes in Lion. Perhaps I will just use a smaller drive for my music needs and the 1TB drive converted to exFAT for all other media storage.

Hope this information helps for anyone else looking to do the same!
