2700k won't increase multiplier past 35

Thread Starter
I have an i7-2700k on an Asus p8z68 deluxe/gen3 board. I'm trying to overclock the guy, but my multiplier will not go past 35. In the cpu configuration section under the advanced tab it lets me set the multiplier as high as i want, the option isn't greyed out or anything, but it will not take effect. I've reset a few times. The option stays @ 40, but in the spec sheet it lists the current multiplier @ 35. I've disabled turbo and all that jazz, and set all of my voltages/timings etc to manual over auto. Any ideas to get this guy to stick?

P.S. I'm trying to just OC the base multiplier. I don't want a turbo core OC. Just 4.0Ghz all the time

What spec sheet are you talking about? What does CPU-Z say your Speed is at?

Leave the cpu configuration page on default setting and change the turbo multiplier to your desired value.

For a 4ghz overclock you shouldn't really need to change much.

Do this:

Set Ai clock tuner to XMP
Set turbo ratio to all cores and 40 or your desired voltage
set llc to ultra high
and set the voltage to 1.3v manually and test with prime

Lower or increase vcore according to stability.

450

Do the same as the above but set the multiplier to what you want.

450

For the above, change the LLC to Ultra high (75%) leave Dram voltage (XMP does that for you automatically) and leave the vccio for now.

Also enable spread spectrum and disable PLL overvoltage unless a particular multiplier doesn't boot into windows (it's usually the high ones, 46+)

One last thing, use manual voltage for now and then once you find the correct stable voltage for your overclock you can then change it to offset.

Hope that helps thumb.gif

But won't that only increase the cpu speed when turbo core kicks in?

yes which is not a bad thing is it? You can however disable that and have the overclocking showing 24/7 by disabling C1E and EIST (speedstep) but it's not necessary for sandy bridge as it doesn't effect the stability..

Until an hour or so ago i hadn't needed to overclock at all. I was playing TF2 on 2fort, and when i stepped out of the spawn onto the main area, my fps dropped to ~20 from 200+. this hasn't happened before on any other map or source game. I looked around, opened some cpuz, and i discovered this lag was more or less directly related to Turbo. (It wasn't your standart FPS lag, and it's definitely not network lag, my ping remained the same) My cursor would become sluggish as well as my movements, not just frame skipping here.

So, yes, i think overclock only when turbo core kicks in is a bad thing. Although, in any other circumstance, i would agree with you. My corsair H100 can handle it, i promise

Okay well try what I mentioned above and see what happens, I'm pretty certain that it should work fine. I've overclocked many of these chips with turbo and haven't had any issue's.

Good luck, by the way if you need a more detailed guide then click on the stable club thread in my sig, it should have links to several guides. thumb.gif

Somehow, i got the 40x to stick and the problem in tf2 persisted. I will try your guide tho. Turbo from 3.9 to 4.0 is a bit brainless tbh.

Also, much thanks for your help! I will definitely check out your guide for my future endeavors. I have big plans for this 2700k biggrin.gif
