Looking for a new TV.

Thread Starter
Wanna get a new one for Christmas...

Have had a Sharp 32'' CRT TV since like 1999 / 2000, I think. Still has great picture, but it is getting old, it's huge, weighs a ton, and has problem with all the 16x9 16x10 content. Big black bars. I also wanna buy a PS3, and it'll look like **** on an old CRT that can't even do 720p.

Wanted a decent upgrade; I was thinking in the 42-46 inch range. Not opposed to 50-52 inch, but I kinda wanna spend 500-700$ish on it.

I heard Plasma has the best picture, no blur, ectera, but it's heavier, consumes more power,

LED / LCD is lighter, less power, ectera, but can't display great blacks and kind of blurry, even with the 120hz monitors.

Lifespan is about the same these days; Plasma's no longer suffer from burn in issues.

I also heard Panasonic for Plasma's.

Was thinking this:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+42%22+Class+/+Plasma+/+1080p+/+600Hz+/+HDTV/2120195.p?id=1218319596899&skuId=2120195

Or for 50$ more, 46 inch:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+46%22+Class+/+Plasma+/+1080p+/+600Hz+/+HDTV/2343193.p?id=1218321953436&skuId=2343193

What do you think? Suggestions, thoughts? Ectera.

Notes: I don't care for 3D, and in most cases, I saw it spiked the prices several hundred dollars.

I have a 32 inch Philips, did a lot of research when buying it and found the 5000 and 6000 series to be some of the best in that price range:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Philips+-+46%26%2334%3B+Class+/+1080p+/+120Hz+/+LCD+HDTV/2762149.p?id=1218349684450&skuId=2762149&st=philips&cp=1&lp=2

We have 3 5000 series and 1 7000 series at home and are very happy with them. if you can find a 7000 series 42 inch anywhere I'd probably go for the reduced screen size but gain in quality.

hope this helps

By the way, I am using mine as monitor too and loving it!

I'd go with that 46in probably.

Also, check this thread: http://www.highdefforum.com/flat-panel-tvs/132557-whats-best-50-plasma-750-a.html

800$ is stretching it abit.

It really depends, and thanks MVE, but that's a LCD, and I'm not partial to them, plus, Philips doesn't make good TV's, no offense.

Give any suggestions though, even if it's just a little out of my price range.

Hmm, alright.

Anyone else got suggestions? Really want Plasma, as not a fan of LED / LCD tech still, my monitor is LCD, and just bleh, compared to the old CRT's...I hear Plasma is in between the two.

Panasonic ST30 if you go plasma, widely considered the best value TV this year. Avoid the S30 as it has a cheaper panel.

It's also alot more expensive, and from what I read; basically the S30 lacks 3D for like 250$ cheaper. Panel seems nearly the same, but no conclusive tests were done.
